Learn to manage anaphylaxis in Spanish. This lesson is the second half of a clinical dialogue I recorded with Elizabeth Cortez de Español Sin Límite.

In the last lesson, a boy presented to the emergency room with anaphylaxis. He received epinephrine, an albuterol neb, and IV fluids. The doctor examined him to ensure that his airway was open, he was breathing easily, and his blood pressure was stable.

In this lesson, you’ll hear the doctor do the following in Spanish.

• Reassure the mother after her son’s allergic reaction;
• Order antihistamines and steroids;
• Recommend a few hours of observation in the ER;
• Discuss common triggers of anaphylaxis;
• Discuss referral to an allergist for allergy testing;
• Prescribe and explain how to use an EpiPen.

D: Ahora está respirando bien. Y su presión está bien. Esto me da mucho gusto.

Paige, voy a ordenar antihistamínicos y corticoides y vamos a tenerlo bajo observación aquí en urgencias unas horas.

E: De acuerdo, doctora.

D: Señora, no se preocupe. Su hijo va a estar bien. Parece que tuvo una reacción alérgica severa que se llama anafilaxia y es muy probable que haya sido por los camarones.

M: ¿En serio?

D: Sí. Aunque no podemos estar cien por ciento seguros de cuál fue el activador de la reacción alérgica, los desencadenantes más comunes son alimentos, nuevos medicamentos y picaduras de insectos.

M: Me preocupa que sea alérgico.

D: Tranquila. Todo va a estar bien. Vamos a mandarlo con un alergista (alergólogo) para hacerle algunas pruebas de alergia.

D: Además, voy a recetarle autoinyectores de epinefrina.

Es muy importante evitar los camarones y que siempre lleve dos autoinyectores con él para que pueda inyectarse si vuelve a tener una reacción, y que vaya directamente a urgencias. En caso necesario, el médico le indicará que use el otro autoinyector. Se inyecta en medio del lado exterior del muslo y puede inyectarse a través de la ropa cuando se trate de una emergencia.

M: Muchas gracias, doctora.

D: Es un placer.

Note the absense of a preposition before “una horas.” You could also say, “durante unas horas” o “por unas horas.” All three options are correct.

Referring to a male respiratory therapist: 
The respiratory therapist gave him an albuterol neb.
El terapeuta respiratorio le hizo una nebulización de salbutamol.

HACERLE UNA NEBULIZACIÓN AL PACIENTE is a common way to express administering a nebulized medication (a neb) to a patient.

Using the verb ADMINISTRAR y SUERO:
We are giving him a rapid infusion of IV fluids.
Le estamos administrando una infusión rápida de suero.

Using the verb PONER:
We are giving you IV fluids.
Le estamos poniendo suero / líquidos intravenosos.

Note how the word SHOCK is the same in both English and Spanish. 

It appears that he had a severe allergic reaction called anaphylaxis.
Parece que tuvo una reacción alérgica severa que se llama anafilaxia.
