Could you answer the clinic phone in Spanish? Learn to answer the phone, obtain basic patient information and transfer a call in Spanish. In this podcast, a patient calls the clinic and speaks with the receptionist and then is transferred to the nurse line to leave a message.

In Latin America, people often have two first names (similar to our first and middle names) and two surnames. The first surname is typically from their father, and the second is from their mother. When women marry, they usually replace their maternal surname with their husband’s paternal surname.

In casual settings, people might introduce themselves using one of their first names (whichever they prefer) and their paternal surname. In formal contexts, like a clinic, they might use all four names.

For example, my teacher’s name is Ana Daniela Grave Aragón. She prefers her second name, so she introduces herself as Daniela Grave. Her first name is Ana, her paternal surname is Grave, and her maternal surname is Aragón.

If you want to ask for someone’s full name, say “nombre completo.” Typically, if they give four names, the last two are surnames: the first from their father, the second from their mother (or husband’s if married).

Finally, in Mexico, there’s a shift where the mother’s paternal surname can sometimes come first.

To ask for someone’s address, you can use: ¿Cuál es su dirección? / ¿Cuál es su domicilio?

Note how it is less common to use the pronominal (reflexive) form of the verb when speaking of falling from a location. Learn more: Verbs of Motion – Reflexive vs Not Part 1

In Spanish, it is more common to express this in the active voice, literally, “Has a vehicle struck you?” Also, in this case, Luis used LE when referring to the direct object of the verb ATROPELLAR. When addressing someone as USTED, you will note LE is commonly used to refer to the direct object.

Were you in a car? 

In these examples, we use the verb IR to express motion. You could also use ESTAR in each of these examples. 

¿Iba en motocicleta?
Were you on a motorcycle?

¿Iba en bicicleta?
Were you on a bike.

Were you on an electric bike?

¿Iba en patineta?
Were you on a skateboard?

You will also hear “moto” to refer to a motorized scooter.

Learn to manage anaphylaxis in Spanish. This lesson is the second half of a clinical dialogue I recorded with Elizabeth Cortez de Español Sin Límite.

In the last lesson, a boy presented to the emergency room with anaphylaxis. He received epinephrine, an albuterol neb, and IV fluids. The doctor examined him to ensure that his airway was open, he was breathing easily, and his blood pressure was stable.

In this lesson, you’ll hear the doctor do the following in Spanish.

• Reassure the mother after her son’s allergic reaction;
• Order antihistamines and steroids;
• Recommend a few hours of observation in the ER;
• Discuss common triggers of anaphylaxis;
• Discuss referral to an allergist for allergy testing;
• Prescribe and explain how to use an EpiPen.

Es muy importante evitar los camarones y que siempre lleve dos autoinyectores con él para que pueda inyectarse si vuelve a tener una reacción, y que vaya directamente a urgencias. En caso necesario, el médico le indicará que use el otro autoinyector. Se inyecta en medio del lado exterior del muslo y puede inyectarse a través de la ropa cuando se trate de una emergencia.

M: Muchas gracias, doctora.

D: Es un placer.

Note the absense of a preposition before “una horas.” You could also say, “durante unas horas” o “por unas horas.” All three options are correct.

HACERLE UNA NEBULIZACIÓN AL PACIENTE is a common way to express administering a nebulized medication (a neb) to a patient.

Using the verb ADMINISTRAR y SUERO:
We are giving him a rapid infusion of IV fluids.

Using the verb PONER:
We are giving you IV fluids.
Le estamos poniendo suero / líquidos intravenosos.

Ma’am, don’t worry. Your son is going to be okay.

Note how the word SHOCK is the same in both English and Spanish. 

It appears that he had a severe allergic reaction called anaphylaxis.

In this lesson, Elizabet Cortez from Español Sin Límite, and I discuss Harm Reduction in Spanish. 

According to the National Institutes of Health, harm reduction is defined as interventions aimed to help people avoid the negative effects of drug use, namely infections and overdose.  It also allows us to meet people where they are with kindness and respect.

We discuss a recent Radio Ambulante episode, Sala de Consumo, which tells the story of two organizations in Mexico that use a harm reduction strategy by providing safe tools and a supervised setting for using drugs.

After the discussion, we practice some of the key vocabulary.
