Excelling in an office is 1/2 work quality and 1/2 presentation every. single. time.
People can only see what they actually see. Only your boss, and not even your boss fully, knows what you do all day and the quality of your work. You need to present your work in a way that impresses people.
I've seen dozens of hardworking, amazing colleagues be let go in a reorganization because their boss and their boss's boss didn't SEE what they were doing and HOW they were contributing.
Make sure your organization respects you, your work, and your mind by presenting your work - EVEN WHEN YOU'RE NOT ASKED. Especially when they don't ask!

Senior leaders promote leaders who have shown that they have the potential to deal with all the crap that managers have to deal with while also inspiring a group of people to follow them, trust them, and do their jobs BETTER than they were before.
So, learn to influence without authority first by gaining trust (by being trustworthy), being passionate and optimistic about your work, and helping your team whenever and wherever you can, even if it’s not your job, and thinking beyond your role.

Most people think they need to work longer hours to get ahead. I hate that. It's not true. I don't believe in working more than 45 hours MAXIMUM per week... and I still climbed right up the career ladder quickly.
You can, too! Listen to this episode to hear a single story as to how I worked smarter and harder, then find out how you can do that, too.
Take your work week down from 40 hours to 35 hours to 30 hours... and maybe all the way down to 20 hours per week, so you can have the time to pick up projects that will help you grow, network, and develop the skills you need to catch management's eye and climb your own ladder.

You're hired for your experience and your potential, not just your experience. Your manager is expecting you to grow into your role, so grow. Make it a priority. Learn. Understand that your current skill set won't be enough for you to succeed in a new job.
That's especially true once you become a manager. I tell a story of my first direct report and how I had to grow into management in that new role.
