May 30, 2022PAUL WALSHPaul Walsh may have only spent 18 months at Manchester City, but it left a lasting impression on his life. Speaking to the Blue Moon Podcast's David Mooney in 2021, he says that it was actually one of the most enjoyable spells of his entire career - and that's part of a career where he won the league and the FA Cup away from Maine Road. As part of a dynamic, free-flowing and attacking side under Brian Horton, Walsh was a forward who would regularly get fans on their feet - and he formed an impressive partnership with Uwe Rosler. Here's his interview. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information....more29minPlay
May 29, 2022KIT SYMONSFor a spell, Kit Symons thought he had scored the goal that had kept Manchester City in the Premier League. His equaliser on the final day of 1995-96 against Liverpool at Maine Road seemed to be enough to secure survival - but duff information had reached the dugout. That 2-2 draw was still sending City down, and their time-wasting had been problematic. Symons was at City during one of the most difficult spells - which included managerial changes and two relegations. The Blue Moon Podcast's David Mooney spoke to the former captain in the summer of 2020. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information....more27minPlay
May 29, 2022SHAUN GOATERThere are heroes and then there are heroes. For a generation of Manchester City fans, Shaun Goater was the go-to man to represent the club. Originally, though, supporters didn't take to him - believing him to be a lower-league slogger rather than the man to spearhead their return to the big time. How wrong they were, as The Goat scored with damning regularity at all levels of the game for the Blues. David Mooney spoke to the Bermudan twice for the Blue Moon Podcast, both times in 2013, to discuss his career and iconic status at Maine Road. Hosted on Acast. March 11, 2022JEFF WHITLEYThere are plenty of stories of footballers suffering with addiction problems, but there is none quite as shocking as Jeff Whitley's. While he was playing at Manchester City, he was a chronic alcoholic and hooked on drugs - to the point where his nights out would spill over from after the match to taking place pretty much all week. In a stark and brutally honest interview with the Blue Moon Podcast's David Mooney, the former midfielder explains how he got to the point of waking up and wanting to die - and how he overcame his addictions to get his life back on track. March 10, 2022MIKE RIGGWhen Mark Hughes became Manchester City manager in 2008, he appointed Mike Rigg as his technical director, a role that was being created at the club. At the time, Premier League scouting networks were still fairly new - and it was Rigg's responsibility to make sure that the players who were being put forward to join the club were the right fit, both on the pitch and off it. In 2020, the Blue Moon Podcast's David Mooney spoke to him about the role - including how it changed when Hughes was sacked and Roberto Mancini came into the dugout instead. Hosted on Acast. March 09, 2022ANDY MORRISONAfter a troubled stage in his career, Andy Morrison moved to Manchester City from Huddersfield as the club had sunk into the third tier. A fiery character, the Scot was just what the Blues needed to give them leadership in one of their toughest seasons - and City were just what Morrison needed to get back on the right track. Described as "a bit of a bully" by Joe Royle, Morrison captained the team back to the Premier League from Division Two. He spoke to the Blue Moon Podcast's David Mooney about his career and the flashpoints in his life that sparked his temper. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information....more34minPlay
March 08, 2022KIKI MUSAMPAWhen Kevin Keegan needed to freshen his squad up in the January transfer window of 2005, he brought in a pacy winger from Atletico Madrid on a half-season loan. Kiki Musampa impressed, with some key goals in the run-in that almost saw the team qualify for the UEFA Cup, under new manager Stuart Pearce. Musampa returned for 2005-06 on a season-long loan. In 2019, he spoke to David Mooney about his time at Eastlands - and about his experience of the racial abuse that black players suffer in football. Hosted on Acast. March 07, 2022DAVID BRIGHTWELLThroughout the 1990s, there was a batch of Manchester City graduates who made their way into the first team that fans were able to feel a connection to, largely because they were from the local area. A pair of brothers, Ian and David Brightwell, were in that bracket. In 2018, David Mooney caught up with David to discuss how he made the journey from youth football in the local leagues in Congleton all the way up to City's first team - and the influence of having an older brother already playing for the club when he first arrived. March 04, 2022NICOLAS ANELKA (short)When Manchester City returned to the Premier League under Kevin Keegan, the manager wanted somebody who would be able to lead the line and score the goals that wouldn't just keep his side in the top flight - but someone who would secure them a top half finish. The boss broke the club's record transfer to bring in centre-forward Nicolas Anelka, after he'd been on a loan spell at Liverpool the year before. David Mooney spoke to the striker in 2019 to discuss his time at the City of Manchester Stadium for the Blue Moon Podcast. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information....more5minPlay
March 03, 2022MICHAEL BROWNOften seen as a Premier League journeyman, Michael Brown started his career in England with Manchester City, coming through the ranks in the mid-1990s. He is one of a handful of players to have been sent off on their debut for the club, ten minutes after coming off the bench against QPR in 1995. He played under several City managers, featuring in the 1999 Division Two play-off final, before being moved on the following year. Never far from controversy, the former City midfielder spoke to the Blue Moon Podcast's David Mooney. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information....more17minPlay
