When in need of some midfield security in the mid-1990s - to stave off the threat of relegation - former City manager Brian Horton turned to a holding midfielder from Germany. Steffen Karl arrived on a short loan in 1994 from Borussia Dortmund, joining his fellow German Uwe Rosler at Maine Road. The loan wasn't made permanent and so Karl moved on after a handful of games - and one goal, a winner against Southampton at The Dell. The story of Nicky Weaver's Manchester City career couldn't be more of a rollercoaster. From the highs of saving penalties in the Division Two play-off final in his first season, to the lows of almost having to retire with a very serious knee injury just over three years later, Weaver's time was never dull. An experimental and career-saving operation was to follow, before he returned to first team action in 2006 - fighting to take the number one jersey back. Everybody remembers who scored the goal that equalised against Gillingham at Wembley in 1999, just as they remember the scorer of the winner against QPR in 2012. But, just as Sergio Aguero's effort wouldn't have been possible without Edin Dzeko's header, Paul Dickov's strike would never have happened were it not for Kevin Horlock's 90th minute goal in the Division Two play-off final. Michael Ball's two-and-a-half seasons at Manchester City saw some of the biggest changes the club would ever go through. He arrived in Stuart Pearce's final season - where the team scored only 10 goals at home all year. He was then part of the team managed by Sven-Goran Eriksson, after the takeover by Thaksin Shinawatra in 2007 - before playing his final season at the club under Mark Hughes, after the next takeover by Sheikh Mansour in 2008. For many Manchester City fans, Joey Barton is the man who was sent off for elbowing Carlos Tevez in the club's 3-2 win over Queens Park Rangers, when Roberto Mancini's side went on to snatch the Premier League title in 2012. Undoubtedly a man with a history of troubles in the game, Barton came through the ranks at Maine Road, breaking into City's team under Kevin Keegan in 2003, before going on to become a regular in the side. He was never far from controversy throughout his career - and he spoke to the Blue Moon Podcast's David Mooney about it all.

As Manchester City battled against relegation from the Premier League in 2001, Joe Royle sought to add more firepower to his squad. From Leeds United, in came Darren Huckerby - a pacy centre-forward with an eye for a goal. Injury meant he wasn't able to play a crucial role in that end of season fight, but he came back better than before as Kevin Keegan's new-look City romped to the Division One title in 2001-02. Huckerby was a key part of that team, which scored bags of goals on their return to the top flight. In 2019, he spoke to David Mooney about his City career.

When Joe Royle wanted to freshen up his goalkeeping options in the 2000-01 season, he turned to someone who had been making waves at Stockport County. Carlo Nash had played well in his appearances against the Blues and he was brought in to rival Nicky Weaver for the number one jersey at Maine Road. However, as City were relegated to and then promoted from Division One, Nash found himself as the club's number two - behind veteran goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel.
