I have a very special guest today ... my sister, Sonja Shea!   Sonja is an autism mom, photographer, fiancé and an advocate for autism.
She runs her own photography business and has a studio located in Moville, IA. Until recently she also worked as a server at a chain restaurant in Sioux City, IA, but decided to take a break from that and focus on her business and staying home more with her son.
She is engaged to a wonderful man & father who loves both Thadius & her with all his heart and is always working his butt off to support them and make sure they have everything they need. 
Thadius is their amazing son who is 5 and just lights up their world every day.   That doesn’t mean she doesn't get frustrated or angry at times...because trust her, she does lol, but there isn’t a day that goes by that she's not proud of him. 
️ Raising a child with autism is something that nobody can train you for because every child is different. So Sonja and her fiance just do the best they can and they see where the day takes them!
Sometimes they have good days. Sometimes they have bad days.   To add to that...they also have an English Mastiff named “Zeus”, a chihuahua named “Babies”, a ferret named “Milo” and two fish lol.
Sonja's life can get pretty hectic, but it’s her life and she loves it! :)   Her hope by doing this podcast and sharing her experience with you is that it can help in some small way.
Maybe you have a child with autism ... or you are unsure and are going through the doctors right now to find out?
Maybe you have a family member/friend with an autistic child?
Either way, she hopes this just helps explain it a little better for people who have trouble understanding.

We are living in an important time of transition right now. In case you've been living under a rock, George Floyd, a black man, was killed by Minneapolis police. And I'd like to talk about it.

My intention is not to take away from our black leaders by speaking on this myself. I am hoping to inspire my listeners to change our generation and the generations to come.

Nothing will change until someone takes a stand. And all of us can be that someone. All of us can be better, do better, and show others the way.

Today I'm speaking with Jacob LeClair, a husband, dad to three young kids, and a tire shop manager in small-town Iowa.

He tells us what it was like for him as a kid growing up in a "normal family" with his mom, dad, and older brother, and what it was like when his parents divorced due to his mom coming out as gay.

He also talks about what his life and relationships with his parents are like now a few years later, after both of his parents have moved on with their new spouses and he has started a family of his own. 

Overall, Jacob has chosen to approach his family's situation with openness, honesty, a sense of humor, and love for both of his parents. Through it all, he learned that he should never be afraid to be himself and that everyone can benefit from not taking life so seriously.

Jacob is grateful to now be raising his own children with the firsthand experience of gay relationships being just as normal as heterosexual ones.

Happiness is a choice (most of the time).

We can go through an entire day and have a bunch of good stuff happen to us, but if even just one bad thing happens we can quickly spiral out of control and focus only on that one bad thing. It's so easy to do!

We have to make a conscious decision to choose happiness and focus on gratitude. The more that we do this, the more good stuff we attract into our lives!

How do I practice this in my life? I make lists of what is going well in my life and what I am grateful for. I keep my mind focused on the positive as much as possible so that I'll attract more positive in return. I also do as much during the day as I can to make myself happy such as my morning routine, yoga, being outside in nature, playing with my kids and my animals, etc.

Try it for yourself. Make it a point to spend more time every day doing things that you love. Write down what you are grateful for. Focus on thinking positive thoughts. New research shows that it takes 10 weeks to create a new habit, so do these practices for 10 weeks and see how your life transforms.

Episode 158: If You Dig Yourself a Hole You Can Still Get Out

Today, I want to talk about failure and putting ourselves down if we don't have this magical number, goal, or label that makes us feel worthy or successful. 

When I was younger I did not have a great mindset around money and didn't know how to manage it well, and therefore my credit score was pretty crappy and I had loads of debt.

Luckily I have learned from my past mistakes, my money management skills are way better than they used to be, and I am living in alignment with my financial goals. I got myself out of that hole! And let me tell you - it feels so much better.

So why am I sharing about this? Because I'm just a human having a human experience. If I can help someone else by sharing my own experiences and my own mistakes, then that's what I'm here to do. It is never my intention to make anyone else feel uninformed or less than, but to help them learn from my past experiences.

Just know this: even if you've dug yourself a hole - whether it's financial or otherwise - you can always get out. Don't give up. Ask for help. Learn from your mistakes. Set goals for your future. Make a plan to achieve those goals and stick to it. 

Imagine how damn good that will feel!
