Today I'm speaking with Susan Erickson, a certified life coach based in Sioux City, Iowa.

Today I'm speaking with Shelby Smith, also known as Mother of Crickets. She is a former college basketball player turned equity derivatives trader turned cricket farmer. She has been raising bugs and convincing people to eat them since 2018!

She began her little adventure by raising and selling her crickets exclusively at farmers’ markets. Much to her surprise, she sold out of every single cricket she raised during her first farmer’s market season. People just couldn’t get enough of them.

This forced her to expand her production area by 5x prior to her second season, but she still wasn’t able to keep up with growing demand. People love these things!

Since then, she has recruited a network of farmers to raise crickets right here in Iowa. She has 3 contract growers up and running as of March 2020 and two more coming online before the summer.

When she's not tending to daily cricket chores, trying out new flavors of energy bars, or wrangling free-range crickets that have escaped, you can find her hiking, biking, running, and lifting heavy weights.

I had a call with my team today and, amongst many other things, we were discussing pivoting when things are no longer working and sales strategies.

 

I have still been operating on my "pre-covid" work hours even though I'm no longer going to my office everyday, but instead working at home while taking care of my kids. I've been realizing lately that it hasn't been working for me. It's been causing me extra stress and I've been having trouble getting my work done on time. 

 

Since I have much better self-awareness now than I used to, I asked myself, "If this isn't working, then why am I doing it? What else can I do?" 

 

So I decided to "pivot" and change when my designated work hours are. I created a new schedule that is much more in alignment with how my life looks right now. It will work out so much better for myself, my family, and my work!

 

You can do this too! If there is something in your life that isn't working try asking yourself, "Why am I doing this? What can I do differently so it feels better?"

 

Also in this episode, I talk about sales and how you have to nurture relationships so your potential clients will "know, like, and trust" you before asking them to invest in what you're selling. And you need to offer variety in your advertisements - just posting the same things over and over and over usually will not work!

Your perspective matters! 

 

Sometimes, we can get so stuck in our own way of thinking. You know, like when we're so bound and determined to be right that we make ourselves angry and frustrated, and we just want to shake someone else for not agreeing with us.

 

I'm sure you've been there. I know I have!

 

You know I love simplifying concepts with stories and analogies, so in this episode I use an example of a fence post to explain different perspectives. Many people can look at the same exact fence post but see it in countless different ways and from different angles depending on where they're looking at it from. You can choose to stay in your spot and see the fence post only from your specific viewpoint, or you can choose to take a step to the left or the right and see it from those different viewpoints, and on and on. 

 

We have this freedom all the time. We can choose to see things from someone else's perspective. It doesn't mean that we necessarily have to agree with their perspective, but we can at least understand their view and where they are coming from.

 

Choosing to see things from someone else's perspective is FREEING! It helps us let go of our anger, frustration, and need to be right all the time. And it helps us to reduce conflict in our relationships. It's not always easy, trust me, but it is worth it.

 

I give some examples of this from my own life, and talk about how seeing things from my husband's and kids' perspectives benefits ALL of us.

 

It is ALL ABOUT PERSPECTIVE!
