Vs 1 God expects and enables His people to be faithful and fruitful in their ministries

Vs 1-2 Ministry requires courage, because some reject the gospel, but God has given us boldness and power through the Holy Spirit

Vs 7-8 Raising spiritual infants to maturity requires large doses of time and tender loving care

Vs 3 Genuine Christians are changed people: they are known by their working faith, serving love, and steadfast hope

Vs 4 Salvation requires both God’s sovereignty and human responsibility; by grace, God chose you for salvation, and through faith, you are responsible to believe in Jesus as your Savior

Summary -- Lessons from Job

• God is sovereign over everything all the time

• Suffering is inevitable in a sinful world, but God uses troubles and trials to purify us from pride, and deepen our dependency on Him

• The God of the Bible is the perfect Father who always does what is best; He may allow suffering, but He always gives grace

• We can endure earthly suffering when we see it through the lens of eternal glory

• God is enough for whatever we need

38: 4-11 The origin and scope of the creation testifies to the infinite power of the Creator.

38: 31-38 God’s control goes from the macro, (stars and galaxies), to the micro, (raindrops, subatomic particles and genomes.)

Job 40: 6-14 God’s providence goes beyond human perception, so judging God’s governance is both ignorant and arrogant.

42: 1-6 Suffering can lead us into a deeper relationship with God which gives us eternal perspective and peace.

42: 7-9 God wants us to pray for sinners to be reconciled to him.

42: 10-17 Our relationship with God is restored when we repent, but some things in our lives may not be healed until heaven.

James 2: 14-18 Our relationship with God is revealed by how we treat others.

Job 29: 11-17 A person who loves God stands up for the rights of the helpless.

Job 31: 1-11 A person who loves God is called to be morally pure, and that requires purpose and planning.

31: 5-8 A person who loves God tells the truth and refuses to covet.

31:13-15 Since everyone is created in God’s image, God’s people must treat all people with dignity and respect.

31: 16-32 Providing food, clothing, shelter and hospitality to those in need practically demonstrates God’s love.

31: 24-28 God’s people should put their confidence in God alone, and not themselves or their ‘stuff.’

31: 29-30 When you love and pray for people who oppose you, you are acting like God acts towards you.

33: 19-30 Pain in the present can prevent sin in the future, if we learn the lessons God is teaching us.

35: 1-14 Sovereign God does not owe anyone anything, regardless of their behaviors; but He has promised to oppose the proud and accept the humble.

Job 23: 8-14 The foundation of our faith is God’s word which guides us and nourishes us.

I Peter 1: 6-7 Trials are painful, but temporary and necessary in order to purify our faith.

James 1: 2-4 Various trials give your faith an exhaustive workout; when you endure, you mature.

Hebrews 12: 5-8 When God disciplines you, its proof that you are a beloved child of God.

2 Corinthians 1: 8-9 God allows us to suffer in order to teach us to rely on Him, and not ourselves.

2 Corinthians 1: 3-6 Our suffering is not always about us; God comforts us, so we can comfort others.

Job 11-19

Job 11, 13: 4-9 When you speak for God, don’t put your words in His mouth; say what God says in the Bible.

Job 12: 1-5 It’s easy to become judgmental when your life is comfortable.

Psalm 73: 1-9 When we envy the wealth of the wicked, we are rejecting what God has entrusted to us.

Job 13:3-24 We often deceive ourselves about ourselves; since God knows everything about us, we should rely on His assessment of us.

Job 16: 9-17: 11 Suffering does not necessarily mean that God is angry with you.

Job 19: 13-21 Suffering can lonely because it often repels other people.

Job 19: 25-27 The problem of human suffering will ultimately be resolved when Jesus, our Redeemer, returns to earth

Psalm 73: 16-19 The key to eternal perspective is worship; when you see God clearly, you see everything else clearly.
