We're halfway! In chapters 9 and 10 of Neverwhere, Richard and Door crash a fancy party, meet the Angel Islington, and maybe definitely get a little drunk. Hunter takes them to Serpentine of the Seven Sisters to recover. Meanwhile, the Marquis tempts fate by bargaining with Croup and Vandemar.

As we read chapters 7 and 8 of Neverwhere this week, and guess what? The Earl’s Court is a train! And the Earl himself is the master of forgotten things. Richard and Door receive a clue: they must find the Angelus. It’s in London Above, though, and Hunter cannot follow them… so they’re on their own. Croup and Vandemar turn up to tell them there’s a traitor in their midst. The Marquis spends some time asking Old Bailey a few essential questions.

We're diving into chapters 5-6 through the theme of impossibility! Richard is at the floating market, where he trades the rubbish in his pockets for food and information. He finds Door auditioning bodyguards and she is furious that he’s come to London Below; all he wants is his life back. Door abandons him, but reconsiders. Croup and Vandemar don’t like the direction their employer is steering them in.

We're reading Chapters 3 and 4 of Neverwhere this week. Richard finds himself invisible and his comfortable, if boring, existence suddenly torn thoroughly away from him. What’s a fellow to do but pack a bag and find some Rat-Speakers to take him to the Floating Market? Guided by Anaesthesia, Richard is about to embark on a truly perilous adventure...

We live in a society, people! At least that’s what we’re examining this week as we kick off our close reading of Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman.

We meet Richard Mayhew, transplant from small-town Scotland to London. He’s got a kind heart, but we’re not sure if it’s going to do him any favours… especially not after he is tumbled into the world of London Below, simply by helping an injured girl called Door. Check out the full show notes on the website.

It's the last episode of season 1! It’s hard to say goodbye to Thisby, but our time with this text is through. We reflect on the last three chapters of The Scorpio Races and how much the characters have grown, and how much we’ve learned through our shared practice of slowing down and talking it through with each other each week. It’s made us better readers, for sure (but we still reserve the right to buzz through books as fast as we can). Check out the full show notes on the website.

It's race day! Puck and Sean (and dozens of other hopeful winners) are headed to the beach to try their luck. Race officials won’t give Puck her colors, and even Gabe’s indignation can’t budge them, but Peg Gratton comes in clutch with something even better. Mutt takes the wrong opportunity, and it costs him his life. Sean survives, but Corr is badly hurt. And Dove, our brave, beautiful Dove, absolutely flies. Well, this section was rough. We never expected to enjoy it, but starting out with Mutt Malvern literally hamstringing a horse he thought was Corr for no good reason makes us furious all over again. Sean wouldn’t have been sorry if he’d killed Mutt (and we see where he’s coming from, though we do have to point out that murder is bad, kids). The beach is a mess two days before the races, there's a funeral, and a kiss. Check out the full show notes on the website.
