Marginalia Pod

This week we read chapters 41-52 of The Scorpio Races and hoo, boy. Yearning, check! Necessity, check! Sean is trying to reconcile with the fact that he gambled for Corr and lost (or did he…) Puck is a comfort, although she’s a bit shirty about a jacket. We get it. Mutt manages to harass Corr sufficiently enough that he kills someone. Nice one, Mutt. But things are looking up: Malvern finally agrees to sell Corr… on the condition that Sean wins the race. Check out the full show notes on the website.

We read chapters 33-40 of The Scorpio Races through the themes of Loneliness & Desperation. There is a storm approaching the island and we're not talking about the tension between Sean Kendrick and Mutt Malvern. Puck and Finn are terrorized by a water horse looking for a bite, and they are saved by Puffin the Cat and Gabe. Meanwhile, Sean is still the one who has to save the stables when the capaill make their way on land in the thick of the storm. Malvern says nothing has changed, but we're not convinced. And Gabe finally rips off the bandaid and has the conversation with Puck. (Finally.) Check out the full show notes on the website.

We’re back this week with chapters 28-32 of The Scorpio Races, and it’s the Scorpio Festival! Grab a November Cake and a nice bracing cup of tea. Jenn D read through the theme of desire while Jen V tackled identity. Puck has to fight the patriarchy just to be allowed to exist, basically (we’re salty about it); Sean gives up on his long-term babysitting gig; and Gabe is a total jerk to Puck. (Gabe.) There’s so much going on in these chapters, but we are on the case. We critically examine everything that happens in chapters 20 through 27 and this time we each chose a theme to focus on: Jen V took pride and Jenn D tackled privilege. Meanwhile on Thisby, Sean is not rolling over for Mutt Malvern anymore, but he’s still got to toe the line with Benjamin Malvern. George Holly keeps popping up, helpful and curious and so darn cute. Puck and Sean find themselves with another chance to get acquainted, aided by Farm Dad™ Thomas Gratton. Sean offers Puck the chance to ride a water horse. Finn thinks this is a bad idea. We think it’s a very good set of chapters. Check out the full show notes on the website.

In the third episode of Marginalia Pod, Jen and Jenn cover chapters 11-19 of The Scorpio Races through the themes of Belonging & Vulnerability. We ponder what it means to belong to a place, a person, a society, to the land you live on - and how this means different things to Puck, Sean, and Gabe. We also talk about why Sean is the only person on the entire island who is able to sort out the capaill uisce. Check out the full show notes on the website.
