Ghostly

Marie Laveau

Listen Later

In Ghostly’s twenty-first episode, Pat and Rebecca explore Marie Laveau, the original Voodoo Queen of New Orleans. Born in 1801, she was known for her charity work and voodoo magic. Everyone in New Orleans knew who to go to for mojo bags and spells to fix their problems. But her legend didn’t die with her death in 1881. Ever since her death, Laveau has been seen all around New Orleans, at her home, at her tomb, and on the streets. Does Marie Laveau still haunt New Orleans?

Questions explored in this episode:

Who was Marie Laveau in life? How

did she practice voodoo? Why was she called the Voodoo Queen? What is voodoo
and how does it work? What charity work did Marie Laveau do? Who was Marie
Laveau II? Where is Marie Laveau buried? Does her spirit grant wishes to those
that mark her tomb? Does her spirit visit her grave in the form of a crow or a black
mass? What are the stories of those who have seen her? Does Marie Laveau haunt
New Orleans?

After the poll results, listen to Rebecca tell a ghost story

inspired by Marie Laveau’s spirit.

Then, listen to hear Pat give the history of voodoo and

Marie Laveau. He also reveals some of his own history with spellcraft and
voodoo.

Time for the debate! Rebecca shares

evidence of Marie Laveau’s spirit and how it haunts the city of New Orleans.
Some say she comes in the form of a crow. Others say she grants wishes to those
who mark her tomb with an X and follow the right rituals. Some report seeing
her figure around her tomb, her old home, or even the streets or stores around
town. Finally, there are stories of her spirit as a black mass hovering over
her home and grave. Listen to Pat’s response to these claims as well as Pat and
Rebecca’s rating of each piece of evidence.
