Marilyn Monroe was an icon of the 20th century whose struggles with mental health and substance abuse were wildly misunderstood during her own time — and for decades after. Her death by drug overdose shocked the world but seemed sadly inevitable due to her traumatic past, out of control fame, and lack of support system.

[CORRECTION: In the episode, we say production on "The Misfits" was held up reportedly so that Marilyn could get drug treatment. She actually was receiving treatment for a nervous breakdown, possibly caused by barbiturate addiction. It still wasn't her fault the movie shut down, though.]
