What does it mean when a movie star is labeled "difficult"? Probably that the men in charge DGAF about her mental state or the reasons for her actions.

Marilyn Monroe was an icon of the 20th century whose struggles with mental health and substance abuse were wildly misunderstood during her own time — and for decades after. Her death by drug overdose shocked the world but seemed sadly inevitable due to her traumatic past, out of control fame, and lack of support system.

Host Molly Mulshine talks with writer, poet and actor Amir Ali-Khan about Marilyn Monroe's tragic life and the ways people misunderstood her.

[CORRECTION: In the episode, we say production on "The Misfits" was held up reportedly so that Marilyn could get drug treatment. She actually was receiving treatment for a nervous breakdown, possibly caused by barbiturate addiction. It still wasn't her fault the movie shut down, though.]
