This week, Shauna O`Reilly from The Ian Dempsey Breakfast show, joined Mario for this week's Story Behind The Song. It's our first U2 song in the series and Shauna did not disappoint with her choice: 'One Tree Hill' by U2.
From the blockbuster album 'The Joshua Tree', the story behind this U2 song stems from a tragedy that occurred to one of the band`s closest friends.
'One Tree Hill' is a Māori landmark that sits atop a volcanic peak in Auckland, New Zealand. It overlooks the city and is a very important place in Māori culture.
When U2 toured NZ with 'Unforgettable Fire' in 1984, they met a Māori man called Greg who was doing security at the gig. One night, Bono was up with jet lag and he went out for a pint with a few of the crew.
Greg and him got on very well and Greg brought Bono up to 'One Tree Hill'. The band really liked him and asked him to come on tour with them. Further to that, when tour was over, Bono asked him to be his PA.
He was like a brother to them, however one night in Dublin in July 1986, Greg, who was 26 at the time, tragically was involved in a motorcycle accident and was killed. Bono wrote 'One Tree Hill' about him and it was a number one hit single back in New Zealand.
Shauna tells us of her love for the song, so much so that she went up to 'One Tree Hill' last December, listening to the song all the way up the volcanic peak.
