  • #70 - Reid Bangert | Revolutionizing Healthcare with Bella VR, a Virtual Reality Platform that Helps Patients Deal with Anxiety and Pain
Reid H. Bangert is the President of Northpass Immersive and Co-Founder of Northpass Media. Northpass Immersive is run by father-and-son team Kurt Bangert (CEO) and Reid Bangert (President). Based out of Kansas City, Mo., the company is dedicated to creating uniquely effective experiences which enable patients to escape the mental confines of their day-to-day environment. BELLA VR's friendly and intuitive design, along with our people-first mentality, make BELLA the smart and efficient solution for healthcare VR.

With no wires and no controller, BELLA, (which consists of three parts, including a Samsung phone), is simple to strap on and easy to use. Patients choose from multiple experiences, including a canoe trip, a breathtaking hot-air balloon ride over New Mexico, a scenic trip up the gondola at Banff National Park in the Canadian Rockies and a live quartet concert. Coming soon is Find Fiona: an interactive game where patients search for a bouncing baby elephant who shows up in a variety of fun and playful scenes.

BELLA can be used in English, Spanish and multiple other languages. Subtitles in 15 different languages are currently available.

BELLA VR offers several firsts for VR in a medical setting:
    * Gaze-based navigation. While many VR devices operate via controller, BELLA is controlled entirely by the user's gaze; the patient simply looks at the experience they want. "We were determined to eliminate the controller, because if you hit a wrong button and you can't see the remote it causes lots of problems and frustrations," says Northpass Immersive co-founder and president Reid Bangert.
    * Auto-horizon adjust. Many Virtual Reality users complain that they can't use the device while lying down. BELLA solves this problem by calibrating and adjusting the unit's horizon to match the patient's current angle. "This is a huge breakthrough," says Bangert. "If you are sitting at a 45-degree angle without the auto-horizon adjust, you have to look down to be level in the experience. If you are flat on your back, you'd have to look completely down your body to get the full experience. We wanted patients to be able to relax completely."

BELLA makes life easier for hospital staff. "It leaves almost zero footprint and can be used in a matter of seconds, without frustration, an important factor in the busy healthcare environment," says Bangert.

Another plus for healthcare providers: with a specialized, non-porous coating, BELLA is easy to clean. "We talked extensively with medical professionals who told us that the padding on the interior of other [VR] platforms is so soft that it is difficult to sanitize. BELLA can be cleaned using only a Sani-Wipe and is quickly ready to use again," says Bangert.
"The integration of interactivity, visibility and seamlessness; that's what we set out to develop—and we did it," says Bangert, adding that the development team sought feedback from local hospital administrators and medical professionals.

Multiple Studies confirm that Virtual Reality can help patients cope with pain and anxiety in a wide range of clinical settings. This includes a University of Washington study that found immersive VR is an effective non-pharmacologic, pain reduction technique in the pediatric burn population and a University of Hartford study that concluded that VR distraction may be a "useful tool for clinicians who work with a variety of pain problems."

Bella VR is a platform that benefits patients from 9 to 90. "We are seeing a lot of interest in Pre-Op, in the ER, and in the oncology unit," adds co-founder and CEO Kurt Bangert. "For us it was all about going beyond the hospital walls. If we could transport a patient to Banff National Park or a beautiful beach in the Caribbean, we could make the entire healthcare experience a more positive and engaging one."

  • #69 - Tammy Wise | Understanding the Amazing Connection Between Your Body and Mind - BodyLogos
Tammy Wise is a widely respected fitness expert and practitioner of holistic healing and Taoist minister. She is the founder and creator of BodyLogos Inc., a Mind-Body Fitness, Wellness and Beauty Company.

Tammy Wise complements her teaching of BodyLogos® with a private practice in the traditional Taoist healing arts. Mind-body alignment is her central focus. Active meditation is her method. BodyLogos® is her movement.

    From Tammy:
My mission to bring Tao into the world through movement didn’t start as a spiritual quest—in fact, growing up, I never considered myself a spiritual person. It started as a question about strength. As a Broadway dancer, my body had always been my strongest ally and sharpest tool. But after a long, fulfilling, career onstage, I stopped dancing and began teaching fitness. The more I taught, the more I found myself less interested in using my body and more curious about how my body used energy.

I studied the power of food at Ann Marie Colbin’s nutritional cooking school, The Natural Gourmet. Then, onto John Lindseth’s Chinese herbology course and then, The School of Classical Taoist Herbology. I was like a sponge, absorbing any and all information on how to most optimally work with energy: I became certified in nutrition, meditation, herbs, acupressure.

I finally had a language for all of the theories I’d been putting into practice as a dancer my entire life.

I finally had words and methodologies for the meditative encounters that saved me in my darkest moments. The sun was rising on a new chapter for me, one in which I could not just survive but organize this information into a truly healing, transformative practice that could be integrated into all aspects of life.

That thesis, which flickered into existence over a chin-up bar when I felt my absolute lowest, has completely changed the frequency of my life and countless clients. I have seen clients’ lives change. People who feel like their life is too crowded, their apartment is too small, their job is too stifling use this work to go inward and discover that they are actually too crowded inside. And alignment offers them expansion.

It is a practice that, when trauma crumpled me into a ball after years of repression, gave me the strength to release my pain and change my story. Thanks to BodyLogos, I don’t muse about how glamorous or cool it would be to be anyone else—I am continually becoming the person I want to

  • #66 - Cianna Stewart | Stop Complaining - How to Stop Sabotaging Your Own Joy and Happiness
Cianna Stewart is the author of "No Complaints" a book on how to stop complaining and sabotaging your own joy.

From Cianna - "No Complaints" and created the No Complaining Project because I discovered one very basic thing you can do that can change your life forever and bring you greater joy and more satisfying relationships: Stop Complaining.

Nearly every self-development and spiritually enlightened person (including Jack Canfield, Tony Robbins, Suze Orman, Tim Ferris, T. Harv Ecker, Marci Shimoff, Oprah, and even the Dalai Lama) says that the first step in improving your life and experiencing happiness is to stop complaining and blaming and start taking personal responsibility. They all say this is foundational. It’s where to start. I fully agree with this – and also noticed that they don't tell you how to do it.

At one critical point in my life, I made the decision to stop complaining and I discovered that it was really hard to do because we live in a culture of complaint. It seemed everyone complained and I would be going against the tide. I got stuck listening to complainers and couldn’t say a thing. At work, I started eating lunch alone. I had to stop hanging out one-on-one with certain friends. I couldn’t even watch TV or listen to comedy if I was really committed to ending complaining!

And yet I kept trying because something about it seemed really important. For three years, without telling anyone, I made “No Complaining” my daily practice. To support it, I took classes and read books on psychology, neuropsychology, behavioral economics, sociology, mindfulness, business strategies, somatic therapy – anything that could help me shed some light on the patterns that keep a negative focus in place. Everything I read reinforced this idea that “No Complaining” was the first step in achieving what I wanted out of life.

Eventually, I started telling people what I was doing and then I started to hear about others’ experiences with complaining. I found that even though everyone complained, pretty much no one enjoyed listening to it. I learned that many people know a chronic complainer that they wish would stop – and then they would start complaining to me about this other person’s complaining! Complaining was everywhere! Nobody liked it and yet everyone did it!

Over time I got better at not complaining. I started solving the problems that made me complain in the first place, and changed my approach to situations I couldn’t change. I also saw that my decision to “Go NoCo” was having some concrete effect on my life – effects even greater than I expected. I was better able to notice and appreciate the good things in my life. The terrible things I’d experienced in the past didn’t get in the way of enjoying myself in the moment. The depressed state I experienced every winter started to have less of a hold on me. I became closer with my friends. I felt happier every day. I was even more productive at work. Switching my focus from complaining to problem solving made me a more valuable employee, coworker, and manager. And I was able to see and jump in to new opportunities because my vision was no longer focused on the bad, but was open to seeing the good and the new – the keys to opportunity.

I started writing about my experiences and learnings about complaining began coaching and counseling others on how to eliminate complaints from their lives. Through this, I’ve seen others experience changes in their lives, too, not unlike my own.

I created the No Complaining Project and wrote "No Complaints" to share what I’ve learned with you and everyone else. I believe that our world will be a much better place if it were free of negativity and blame. The decision to stop complaining is one small, personal way to make that world come into being. I hope you join me in this effort. It’s time to stop complaining and start experiencing your life in a whole new way.
