US markets were closed overnight for the Labour Day holiday. We take our leads from European markets this morning - the DAX was down 2.2%, and the STOXX 600 down 0.6% overnight amid the energy crisis that saw LNG pricing in Europe up as much as 35%.

SPI Futures holding well, up eight points this morning.

The Dow closed down 338 points on Friday night following the jobs number that came in with no real surprises and helped subdue interest rate fears. However, news that Gazprom halted restarting the gas pipeline due to an oil leak spooked the market into a 600-point fall.

SPI Futures are down 16 points this morning with the US on holiday tonight.

US markets found some footing overnight as the Dow finished up 146 points, snapping a four-day losing streak, although the Nasdaq fell 0.26%. The iron ore price crumbled, falling 8% to trade below $100, as China reimposed COVID restrictions.

SPI Futures are up 20 points (+0.29%) following the 141-point drop we saw yesterday.

The 1000-point fall in the Dow on Friday night is starting to look like a bit of a downtrend. The Dow closed down a further 280 points (-0.9%) last night, bringing the total slip to 5.5% since Friday. Headlines on oil prices and recession fears colouring the market.
