ASX set to rise. SPI futures up 25 points or 0.28%.

Wall Street gained on the back of Fed Governor Waller's signal that he would hold on rates for September's meeting citing that it was also dependent on US inflation data improvements. September hike odds dropped to a 50/50 from a near 70% earlier in the week. US markets were up, the Dow rose 624 points, the S&P 500 gained 1.06% and the Nasdaq added 1.40%. August ISM services printed at 55.4, above consensus, though prices paid hit a four year high. The VIX fell 5.79%.

Waller's view may have been dovish but the overall theme is still hawkish, Waller's perspective pulled Treasury yields lower. The US 10 year yield dipped 1.1bp to 4.77% and the US 30 year eased 0.8bp to 5.25%. The US dollar fell to its lowest since May, pushing the Australian dollar to a four month high of 72.04c. Bitcoin rallied 5.48% overnight to $81,705. August payrolls are due tonight.

The ASX closed up 42 points or 0.46% to 9020, breaking three sessions of losses. 8 of 11 sectors closed higher, 3 lower. Financials led, up 0.86%, with CBA up 0.8%, NAB up 1.8%, ANZ up 1.3% and WBC up 1.5%. Healthcare and REITs both closed up 0.80% as bond yields eased. Energy was the worst sector, down 1.24%, with BPT down 2.8% and STO down 0.4% as WDS traded ex-dividend. Info Tech fell 0.78% on WTC down 2.4% and TNE down 1.9%.

Materials rose 0.39% despite BHP trading ex-dividend. The Gold sector closed up 2.92%, led by KCN up 5.4%, RSG up 4.3%, NST and EVN both up 2.6%. BSL rose 3.0%, GMG rose 2.9% and NEM rose 2.7%. Iron ore rose 1.74% to $99.25 a tonne and copper held near $6.60/lb, while WTI crude fell 1.20% to $89.92 a barrel on renewed tension in the Middle East. Lithium gave back its gains from earlier in the week, with LTR down 4.0% and WES backed lithium exposure soft. Uranium gained, with DYL up 8.4%.

CTD collapsed 85.6% after it relisted on the ASX. REG fell 27.0% on aged care funding rate changes from October 1, (see ASX today). EGH closed flat after confirming a $123.8m purchase of six aged care communities from INA.

Kospi up 0.26% on semiconductor demand, TAIEX down 0.67%, SSE down 0.72%, TOPIX up 0.58%. US futures flat. The AUD closed at 71.66c.

ASX set to fall. SPI futures down 38 points or 0.43%.

Wall Street rebounded on Wednesday as dip buyers returned after a three day selloff, Trump said US strikes on Iran would be short lived with the probability of a September rate rise falling from 67.2%  to 62.3%. The Dow rose 295 points, the S&P 500 gained 0.46% and the Nasdaq added 0.45%. Materials led with 10 of 11 sectors finishing higher, real estate the decliner. The Russell 2000 was up 1.13% and the SOX added 0.45%. Volume was below average and the VIX was down 6.98%.

Bond yields eased as New York Fed president said inflation continues to ease as tariffs impacts fade, the higher energy prices are not spreading into other services. The US 10 year yield fell 1.3bp to 4.78% and the US 30 year fell 1.7bp to 5.26%. The yen rallied sharply on suspected intervention after a Bank of Japan board member raised the possibility of more aggressive rate normalisation. The USD Index slipped to 99.58 while the AUD added 0.32% to 71.69c. Bitcoin was mostly flat at $77,460.
