Minute Ninety Three: From Big and Green and Buck Ass Nude to Clint Needing to Level OutMatthew Fox from the Superhero Ethics Podcast and season 4 joins us in this episode!
In the ninety-third minute of The Avengers...Bruce continues his conversation with Harry Dean Stanton, the old security guard. We debate exactly what happened to Hulk/Bruce if Stanton saw him big and green and buck ass nude. Does that mean Hulk’s clothes ripped off in his descent? Pete tries making the case that he became Bruce midair, then Hulked out again before impact before going unconscious and turning to Bruce yet again. It doesn’t make a lot of sense no matter how you slice it, but it makes for fun dialogue to come out of Stanton’s mouth. Perhaps that’s the only reason it’s there? We also chat about the extended content of this scene, because it gives a great extra bit of conflict for Bruce. Why did they cut it? And does it reveal that they’re actually on the north end of Jersey right across from Manhattan? Does that make sense?
From there, we enter pop-art Warhol-esque Barton as he struggles to break free from the mind stone’s power. But why this crazy color treatment? It’s not even Clint’s POV. Does Erik go through this same thing all alone on the top of Stark Tower? Natasha’s trying to help him, and this is really our chance to bring Clint into the heroes’ side of the story. Tune in!

  • TA092: Performance Issues
Minute Ninety Two: From An Old-Fashioned Notion to The Old Security GuardMatthew Fox from the Superhero Ethics Podcast and season 4 joins us in this episode!
In the ninety-second minute of The Avengers...We start this minute off with the final moments of Nick Fury as he watches Tony walk out of the room. His pitch failed, at least so it seems. We talk a bit about Fury and his approach, not to mention perhaps his fascist position. From there, we try to figure out exactly what the storytellers are wanting us to get out of this brief moment with Thor. Is he concerned he’s lost his ability to wield Mjølnir and is no longer worthy? Why would he think that? And why is this scene so forgettable?
It also interestingly plays with some audio from the next scene of the security guard – an always delightful Harry Dean Stanton – as he tells Bruce he fell from the sky. We do the IMDb game with Stanton and start our discussion about this interesting scene. Plus, a chat about conveniently placed rubble. Tune in!

  • TA091: The Tony Pitch
Minute Ninety One: From Fury Pitching the Avengers Initiative to Tony Starting to Walk OutLachlan Thiele from the Quiet on Set podcast joins us in this episode!
In the ninety-first minute of The Avengers...Fury continues his pitch to Steve and Tony, and really seems to have singled Tony out for this particular minute. Coulson’s cards were really the extent of his pitch for Steve, after all. So how well does it work? What we do get here in this minute is a great example of shot construction to help tell the story. First, we get the second longest shot in the film as the camera trucks around the table, keeping Tony in the foreground as Fury walks around the backside of it to land at the chair between Tony and Steve. It’s a great moment that keeps us focused on Robert Downey Jr.’s performance the entire time. After a few other shots, we get a great shot of Tony as he stands. It’s a low shot that tilts up to keep him in frame, pushing Fury out of frame entirely. Again, another great way to cinematically tell the story without the characters having to speak.
Fury comes near the end of his monologue and Tony walks out. How did Tony react to the pitch? How about Steve? We’ll find out soon enough. Tune in!

  • TA090: A Reason to Avenge
Minute Ninety: From An Unconscious Clint Being Dragged Away to Fury Starting to Come Clean About Phase 2.Lachlan Thiele from the Quiet on Set podcast joins us in this episode!
In the ninetieth minute of The Avengers...Aside from Clint getting dragged away to the infirmary, this minute is the start of Fury’s pitch to Tony and Steve for the Avengers Initiative. But why isn’t Natasha here? Is it designed strictly as a pitch to the two team leaders who aren’t quite bought in yet? It just hits us as odd that Natasha’s not here. As for Maria, she’s here but relegated to lingering in the background. It’s unfortunate. But Fury makes a great pitch and even tosses Coulson’s bloody cards onto the table. As for his methodologies to get them bloody? We’re not so sure we want to know. But would they increase in value now?
The pitch with the trading cards seems very deliberately targeted at Steve. Why is it Fury’s comment about losing his one good eye that seems to perk Tony up? It’s a great start to a heavy moment at the bottom of act two, and it makes for a great conversation. Tune in!

  • TA089: The Loss of Coulson
Minute Eighty Nine: From Fury Finding Coulson Dying to Natasha Hearing the News About CoulsonKurtis Findlay from the Epic Marvel Podcast joins us in this episode!
In the eighty-ninth minute of The Avengers...Loki gives a last smile as the quinjet flies off. Is he upset at all that at least Clint didn’t make it back? But the real bulk of this minute isn’t about Loki. It’s about the damage he’s done. We get to spend Agent Phil Coulson’s last moments with him here as Nick finds him and tries to keep him alive. We talk about the importance of Coulson to the film and the franchise, as well as how he and this Fury ended up in 616. We also discuss how bringing people back – sometimes more than once – can diminish heavy moments like this.
Hill and Natasha react as well, even if Natasha’s likely also upset about Clint and wondering if he’ll be the same when he wakes up. Tune in!

  • TA088: He Really Had to Red Lever It
Minute Eighty Eight: From Tony Spinning Engine Three to Loki Making His EscapeKurtis Findlay from the Epic Marvel Podcast joins us in this episode!
In the eighty-eighth minute of The Avengers...Tony gets the engine going, and in his HUD we can finally read the altitude. They’re much lower than we would’ve thought. Apparently, that’s why it’s been okay for Clint to be hanging out on the deck. Regardless, we also look at some other HUD readings, and it doesn’t look good for Tony. Is the 312% referencing how overtaxed his suit is as it tries to keep up with the spinning engine? He loses control and then gets bounced around under the fan blades. Is that logical? Should his suit be a bit more... damaged?
Meanwhile, Steve’s managed to pull himself back up and pulls the red lever finally, all while having to dodge shots from the utility stunt player as one of Clint’s men. This is the last one. So how many did they take down exactly? Apparently, Loki and the pilot don’t care if anyone’s still alive as they take off. Tune in!

  • TA087: I Don’t Even Get to Be the Real Villain
Minute Eighty Seven: From A Somewhat Peaceful New Jersey Field to Iron Man Spinning the TurbinePlaywright Dean O’Carroll joins us in this episode!
In the eighty-seventh minute of The Avengers...We leave Thor in the field and return to Loki, happy to have rid himself of his brother again. It turns out Coulson’s not dead though, and he’s got some things to say to Loki. It may be things he needs to get off his chest, it may be a distraction to ready his weapon. Either way, they work and it seems he gets just enough under Loki’s skin by calling him out as someone who lacks conviction. Loki voices a few reasons as to perhaps his motivations for letting himself get caught as well – he’s divided the team and damaged the helicarrier.
But that’s when Coulson gets a shot off with his Destroyer Armor Prototype Gun, aka the Bambino, and it’s a doozy of a shot, blasting Loki through an iron wall. Too bad he’s relatively unfazed.
On the bridge, everyone’s in panic mode as two engines are now down. So why is everyone on the bridge listing with the ship, but no one else in the ship seems to be reacting? Story convenience is our answer. Fury’s watching the altimeter drop, and so is Tony as he gets ready to start spinning the turbine for engine three. Tune in!

  • TA086: A Blow to the Head
Minute Eighty Six: From Black Widow Nailing Hawkeye to Thor Bouncing Along the New Jersey ShorePlaywright Dean O’Carroll joins us in this episode!
In the eighty-sixth minute of The Avengers...While Thor falls from the helicarrier, we cut to Natasha and Clint mid-fight. Again, why is the helicarrier so seemingly unpopulated? Where is everyone? Sure, this is a narrow corridor in the engine room, but with thousands of people on board, surely someone is here?
Regarding the fight, why does this one seem so lackluster? Is it the direction? The cinematography? The fight choreography? The performances? Hard to say. It just doesn’t grab us. But then again, perhaps for a fight between two non-supers, that was the intention? It’s just disappointing because it really feels like they could deliver a bit more. The fight ends with Natasha clocking Clint after he seems to possibly be coming out of his mind control.
And that sends us back to the skies over New Jersey with Thor, still trapped in the cell as he works to gain some leverage so he can use Mjølnir to break free. Luckily, he does just as it’s about to smash on the shore, and Thor skips across the field like a stone in a pond. Tune in!

  • TA085: Coulson’s Last Stand
Minute Eighty Five: From Coulson Taking Charge to The Cage Plummeting Toward the EarthPlaywright Dean O’Carroll joins us in this episode!
In the eighty-fifth minute of The Avengers...
It’s a heavy minute! First, Agent Coulson takes charge of things in the detention area, but then Loki surprises him and Thor by appearing behind him and driving the scepter into his back. This is the moment the writer/director has been building toward with all of our growing sympathies for Coulson. It’s a mean writing trick but an incredibly effective one.
This does lead to some questions from us though. At what point did Loki actually start his magic? And how did he get the scepter? Did the mercenary here grab it for him at some point? We kinda lose track of it after the helicarrier attack starts.
Regardless, the minute’s effective, and the fact that Loki and Thor don’t speak but only share looks before Loki hits the plunger says volumes. It’s a powerful minute. Tune in!

  • TA084: The God of Petulance
Minute Eighty Four: From Thor Running at Loki to Another Downed Mercenary... But From Whom?Mike Gravagno from The Superhero Show Show and Movie of the Year joins us in this episode!
In the eighty-fourth minute of The Avengers...We’re really focused on the filial bond that’s broken in this minute. Once again, Loki manages to trick Thor, this time with his illusion to get Thor into the cell. It plays well, but why doesn’t Loki actually cause more mischief? Wear funny outfits, play funny tricks, etc.? He doesn’t really get to do much of that ever throughout the series, barring a few bits in Thor: The Dark World as Gravagno points out. We also talk about how dark of a character he is here, and how it’s interesting how easy it is for audiences to forgive this genocidal maniac just because Tom Hiddleston’s so charming and the character’s fun. It’s in line with characters like Hannibal Lecter.
We get more fighting between Barton and Romanoff. Where is everyone though? Why is this part of the ship so barren? It’s a shame their fight isn’t very exciting. It does have cool moves though, and it gives us a chance to talk about Barton’s dagger.
The minute ends back in the cell as Thor hits the glass. Why doesn’t he keep hitting it though? Surely, he’d get out before Loki had a chance to open the door and drop him, and even if he didn’t, he’d be closer to out of the cell and have an easier time stopping Loki. But Loki decides to play dirty and is about to drop him when a mysterious figure knocks out the mercenary. But who? We won’t find out today, but Gravagno does get to talk about his love of Coulson. Tune in!
