Growing up in a Christian home I spent most my life feeling unloveable, unworthy and shamed. seeing that there was no creation for love and belonging but separating and segregating others. Throughout my up bringing there was no encouragement for questions, research or logic it was very black and white. My upbringing was centered around projection of fear and control instead of love and belonging and compassion. It was all about control and "obeying" and if you didn't you were going to a bad place and unworthy of being loved. I wanted to share my truth on this sensitive topic with religion and encourage those to be reflective and open minded.
Both religion and spirituality can have a positive impact on mental health. In some ways, they provide the same impact. For example: Both religion and spirituality can help a person tolerate stress by generating peace, purpose and forgiveness. But benefits generally vary between the two due to their different nature. I respect those who are religious and or spiritual (or both) unless those beliefs are structured and rooted in the oppression of other humans and creating fear and segregation.
