May has beautiful flowers and butterflies and sometimes I feel the thorns of the roses. My mother, Alice Elias Arellano, passed away November 11, 2002. It’s been many years, but I still miss her – particularly in the month of May. The first month of May in 2003 was the hardest. If you have lost your mom, you can get what I feel. 

 I’ve worked with clients on the stages of loss. I went through all the Stages of Loss and thought that the pain would end but it didn’t. and the stages of loss didn’t always take the same path.

 The first stage is Denial: “This is not happening.” Refusing to accept, shock or numbness, go about daily routines robotic. If we get stuck in this stage for too long, you began to have physical problems. Depression sets in causing panic attacks…guilt arises. It’s very important to move past this stage.

 The second stage is Anger/resentment: This is good because it’s the beginning of the process of releasing.  

 The third stage is Depression: Crying or withdrawing, crying is a natural way of releasing anxiety…good thing. But if crying continues too long, you could go into clinical depression…might have to go on meds. You must move through this as quickly as possible.   

 The fourth and last stage is Resolution/acceptance. You begin to make sense of what happened. You start putting your life back in order. You might become spiritual seeking higher awareness. There is hope and acceptance of reality. You cannot force this stage. Everyone is ready at their own time.

May is the month for celebrating mothers and appreciating teachers. We have a very special guest on our show today, Shana Kidston, an outstanding mother and teacher. Shana has been teaching throughout her life. She started as a Tutor for the developmentally disabled when she was in high school, then as a Tutor in public school, and now as a teacher in San Bernardino the last 24 years. 

Shana has taught everything from preschool to adults. She has also worked as an Educational Therapist at the Learning Enhancement Center in La Verne. Most of Shana’s teaching career has been on working with students with special needs. Currently she is teaching First Grade.

For the last 24 years, Shana has taught for San Bernardino City Unified School District as a Resource Specialist, previously worked for Chaffey College as an Instructor in their Developmental Disabilities Department

Shana has a degree in Psychology from Pitzer College. Her credentials include Education Specialist with Authorization in Autism Spectrum Disorders, Neurodiversity, and Inclusion Certification, Cross-cultural, Language, and Academic development.

Shana has taken a plethora of courses to enhance her teaching including Neurodiversity and Mindfulness, Reading Recovery, Sensory Integration, Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports, Crisis Prevention, and many others…

We have a very special guest on our show today, Mohara Devi. She is actually a returning guest. Mohara was a guest on September 28, 2021. Mohara is Owner/Director/Instructor of Source Studio in Downtown Riverside. She opened her yoga studio on January 1, 2011. She has over 1,000 Teacher Training hours in many yoga styles. She is a certified Kundalini Yoga Teacher, studied Hinduism in India, Prenatal Yoga in in Sweden. Her travels also include the Buddhist Temple in Thailand.  She has a large teaching staff of dedicated teachers. The classes include Kundalini Yoga, Areal Yoga, Tribal Belly Dance, Bolly X, Pop Pilates and so much more….    

On November 23, Mohara, a single mother, gave birth to her daughter, Zarah, Baby Z, and immediately learned that there was something very wrong. Baby Zarah couldn’t breathe properly, and it was discovered that she was born with a rare birth defect. Mohara’s story will touch your heart, inspire bring you to tears.

We have a very special guest today, Mary Ramos. Mary has done a lot in her life, more than most people. She is unstoppable. What makes her extra special is that she is doing this at a young age of 86. NO excuses people. 

Here’s some background information. Mary came to the U.S. in 1955. She had only one daughter but in 1972 she became mother of four. She brought one niece and two nephews from Mexico to study here in the U.S. she raised them as her own through college age. She considers them her own children.

 In 1966, she joined the work force. She first took a job with Burroughs Corp in City of Industry for seven years, ultimately becoming a Line Supervisor.  Then worked at Delphi Engineering as a Division Manager for 20 years as Production Manager.  Then worked for BWIP International in Van Nuys as General Supervisor until the economic downturn. She then changed careers and became a Real Estate Agent for Century 21 in RE sales and investments for 30 years as Top Producer. She is now retired, but not really.

 During her careers, she had side projects. She joined an organization, the Flying Samaritans. For ten years, she flew to Baja California peninsula once a month to work in the free clinics with doctors and staff providing medical assistance and supplies including dental and eye care for those who could not afford such services. She says, “It was hard, but also fun and very satisfying.”

April is a time for new beginnings. My guest, Laura Retallick's story begins with a tragedy and ends with love.  She is a breast cancer survivor. Her story is a true inspiration. Laura’s story takes you from beginning through all the challenges to a very happy ending.   Her message is powerful. Laura is now experiencing a new beginning. Everyone can benefit from Laura’s story. No matter how bad and dark things look, there is a light that will shine on you. If you are in a similar place, be patient and believe in yourself and trust your intuition. 

Laura is an elementary school teacher. She’s been a teacher for 21 years. I have known Laura for a very long time – over ten years. We had weekly coaching sessions by phone from Riverside California to Champaigne Illinois.   We worked through her challenges, and I witnessed her breakdowns and breakthroughs. Laura is a champion.

April is the month of New Beginnings. Spring brings many opportunities to start fresh. Nature speaks to us. Flowers bloom, birds sing. My fruit trees have beautiful blossoms and will soon bear fruit. There are people in the world who have courageously taken on this natural state of New Beginnings. 

My guest on the show today Brandon Elias is VERY special. Brandon is my grandson. I am so proud of him. His talents are unlimited. He’s an artist, a musician and runs his own business with his sister Nicole. He is also an incredible skateboarder and was featured in magazines. Something else to know about Brandon – he has a big heart. I say he is a heart with legs. When I asked him to be on my show, he said, “of course, I will do anything for you.” 

I asked Brandon to share the part of his life that is the perfect example of taking on a new beginning. His story on addiction will inspire and move you. His addiction to drugs and alcohol and now free from the chains of addiction is awe inspiring. Brandon is my partner in healing humanity.

Yulanda Davis Quarrie is the special guest on my show today. Yulanda has more than 25 years in leadership experience in the field of philanthropy. She recently served as the Director of Institutional Advancement for Ramona Convent Secondary School, a private all-girls college preparatory high school in Alhambra.  

She is a Certified Fund-Raising Executive (CFRE) since 1990. Yulanda has helped secure philanthropic support for various nonprofit organizations in Southern California, primarily in education and healthcare, including Claremont Graduate School, St. Mary Medical Center in Long Beach, Citrus Valley Health Partners, USC Verdugo Hills Hospital Foundation, and St. Lucy’s Priory High School.

In addition, Yulanda serves as chair of AFP’s Global Investment subcommittee and on the AFP Foundation Committee on Appointment. She also (in her spare time, volunteers for various organizations, including the USC Alumni Association, West Covina Rotary and the Pomona Valley Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta. Additionally, she holds membership in the West Covina Women’s Club, Assistance League of Covina Valley and the Pomona Area Chapter of Jack and Jill of America as a lifetime associate member.
