My friend Hugh Mackinnon, aged 91, told me the inspiring story of his grandfather's great win of the 1866 Great China Tea Race as captain of 'The Taeping' After 16,000 miles and 99 days at sea he entered the East India docks 20 minutes ahead of the better ship 'The Ariel' and received 10 shillings per ton bonus which he shared with John Kaey the master of 'The Ariel.'
