Dean grew up in Southern California. As a child, he was the unofficial tour guide to Disneyland for his Minnesota relatives when they came out to California. In the early 1970s, he had a mail-order business selling 8mm sound reels to collectors of Disney Animation... way before videos and DVDs. He also sold Disneyland souvenirs he had picked up at garage sales and swap meets via mail order and makeshift phone in auctions in the 1980s, and in December 1997, when he heard about AuctionWeb, he decided to try it and signed up. Back then, the site that became known as Ebay required sellers to provide minimal written descriptions and no photos!
Dean encouraged Ebay to create a Disneyana subcategory and was invited to their headquarters to help put the new Collectibles category together.
A lifelong Disney fan, he has made presentations in person, on the radio, and TV about collecting Disneyland souvenirs. While always a part-time endeavor to help fund his Disneyland Souvenir collecting habit, he has sold on Ebay for 27 years, and his annual sales are around $50,000.
Dean is a retired college professor.
