Laura and I had a riveting discussion about the art, the emotion, and the expression that are so visible in her one-of-a-kind pieces. Her words describe her technique the best:
"My material is salvaged wood gathered in the aftermath of environmental tragedies, such as Hurricane Sandy, forest fires in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, and from numerous other unnamed storms in Massachusetts. The wood is from damaged and wrecked houses – cedar sidings, screen doors, kitchen cabinets, wood tables- and repurposed into luminous, patchwork constructions. Through these difficult situations, my work is filled with vibrant color and uplifting hopefulness. I never paint the wood, they are as I found them and bear the marks of usage through their nail holes and scratches reminding us that material has memory."
And of course I had questions!

Cheryl Clossin has been quilting for a long time, and her pieces could more rightly be called works of art. She's pretty sure it's impossible to embellish fabric too much, whether it's applique...embroidery...beading...you name it. If you don't believe me, check out her Instagram feed! And zoom in!
We chat at length about bugle beads, French knots, dealing with knotty backs, finding serendipitious fabrics, Prince, and the value of community. And that's just the first 10 minutes

Jemima is a crafter from way back, and joins us from her studio in Australia. She's inspired by all things fabric, textiles, buttons, ribbons and embellishments.
"I started quilting in my teens, making quilts from leftover scraps from Mum's sewing projects. I was quickly hooked and then started to take classes to learn all about different quilting techniques and skills. My professional Background as a High School Home Economics Teacher has driven my passion for teaching and sharing all things quilts and sewing."
Today she designs quilting and sewing patterns for her label, Tied with a Ribbon, specializing in modern, fun designs that pack a punch and deliver helpful skills and tips that even a beginner quilter/sewer can feel confident in making.
Jemima has also written two books – Weekend Quilting and Quilt Big, and has a 3rd one coming out in 2022. They can be found in her website shop, and in your favorite local quilt shop.
