Media Obscura - Retro and Obscure TV/Movie Reviews episodes

  • 27. Back to the Future: The Ride (Perpetual A-Holes)
Things get a little slant on this weeks Media Obscura Podcast! Nick and Mike check out the Universal Studios ride adaptation of Back to the Future as Mike preps for a trip to Orlando with his girlfriend! They also talk about time travel, a family curse that was (probably) put on the Tannen family, and their memories of being... savvy businessmen?

  • 26. Ally McBeal (Heimlich Maneuver and the Mega-Culkin)
Nick and Mike check out the late 90's/early 2000's on this weeks Media Obscura, when they watch Ally McBeal!
In the episode that we checked out this week, S4E12, we find Ally happily dating Larry Paul (played by Iron Man himself, Robert Downey Jr.) when his son suddenly shows up in Boston, ready to sue him!

  • 25. The Underground Comedy Movie (Damn You, Elliot)
Nick and Mike tackle their first recommendation on this weeks Media Obscura Podcast! They're checking out 1999's "The Underground Comedy Movie," written by, starring, and directed by Vince Offer, the Shamwow guy! The Underground Comedy movie is a collection of pop culture sketches that were based off a 80's public access show that Offer was on.

  • 24. The Karate Kid Animated Series (Empanadas Gigas)
If do right, none can defend from the crane kick to the face that is The Karate Kid Animated Series! Released in 1989 and, presumably, bridging the gap from The Karate Kid Part II and III, the series follows Daniel LaRusso, Mr Miyagi, and their friend Taki as they search the planet for a missing shrine with mystical powers. So it's like Dragon Ball meets Indiana Jones and The Karate Kid... Not a great combo!

  • 23. Jake and Amir: Fired (Himalaya Bruise)
Oh sheesh y'all, it's a Jake and Amir themed episode of The Media Obscura Podcast! Nick and Mike chat about their 30 minute special, "Fired," and reminisce about the impact that the comedic duo has had on them over the years. They also talk about pizza bagels, what Nick calls a "Himalaya bruise" and Mike's conspiracy involving paper.

  • 22. The Toxic Avenger (Poseidon's Sea Salt)
On the latest Media Obscura, Nick and Mike check out Troma Films’ The Toxic Avenger! The Toxic Avenger follows a nerdy lad named Melvin who, after falling into nuclear sludge, is reborn as a vigilante superhero. It’s definitely one of the stranger movies that Nick and Mike have watched for the podcast but, if you can overlook a lot of this movie’s more inappropriate/dated sensibilities, there’s a lot of fun to be had with this one! Especially if you’re a fan of campy violence.

  • 21. On The Air (Go Go Gadget Eraserhead)
Nick and Mike check out the often forgotten TV series from David Lynch and Mark Frost, On The Air! It follows the fictitious Lester Guy Show, a variety program that's made in 1950's New York. The show is, in typical Lynch fashion, filled to the brim with all sorts of likable and strange characters, and also features several characters from their other collaboration, Twin Peaks!

  • 20. Scrubs (Barbecue and Dr. Funko Cox)
They can't do this all on their own. No, they're no Superman. This week on The Media Obscura Podcast, Nick and Mike check out one of Nick's favorite TV shows of all time, Scrubs!
While not obscure per say, Scrubs is a show that Nick feels isn't brought up as often as it should. It also doesn't help that the show has yet to be transferred into HD like other shows such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and The X-Files were.

  • 19. The Twilight Zone (Doppelgängers)
To celebrate the release of Jordon Peeles' fresh take on The Twilight Zone, Nick and Mike check out the 80's revival of the classic CBS show. They also talk evil doppelgängers, Chuck Jones cartoons, and about the never ending quest for Most Stuff Oreos.

  • 18. Rhinestone (Where's My Son?)
Finally bringing our March of Stallone to an end, Nick and Mike tackle the 1984 country-musical comedy "Rhinestone," starring Dolly Parton and Sylvester Stallone. Stallone's a cabbie in New York City that's plucked off the street to become the next country singing sensation. It's a bit like "A Star Is Born" meets "Trading Places." It's also not very good.
