This is the fifth and final part of my heartfelt interview with Dr. Fei Hong, clinical psychologist and founding chair of the International Mental Health Network for Expatriates in Germany.
In this episode, we explore three profound themes:
🌿 The Inner Storm of Adolescence and Screen Addiction
From age 14 onward, teenagers experience a tidal shift of emotions, hormones, and identity. They long for connection, fear loneliness, and are easily pulled into the world of gaming and screens. Dr. Fei shares compassionate strategies to support children without control, criticism, or shame.
🌿 The Power of Parental Self-Awareness
Children often mirror us. Dr. Fei reminds us that when we’re glued to our phones, we silently model the very habits we wish they’d avoid. Parenting starts with presence — putting the phone down, returning to the here and now, and offering genuine connection.
🌿 A Global Mental Health Network for Chinese Expats
Dr. Fei also shares the inspiring story of founding the International Mental Health Network for Expatriates — a cross-border nonprofit offering counseling hotlines, peer-support groups, and community resources for Chinese and international expatriates worldwide.
As Dr. Fei beautifully puts it:
"We’re building a safe garden for every soul."
The episode closes with a gentle guided practice of self-acceptance — embracing yourself with compassion and choosing to love yourself a little more, day by day.
