There's always that one thing that brings families together and for mine, it's watching movies as we huddle around some perfectly popped popcorn. My grandfather, who I coincidentally call Pop-Pop, would always cook up a fresh batch for my family and I to snack on as we share laughs and memories together.

My dog Ollie has not been with me for long but he is a new member of the family. His cheerful personality is seen by many and his presence reminds me to slow down. The concrete jungle is a big place but Ollie makes me feel right at home.

Ever since I moved to college, my world has been filled with incessant sound. From sirens on the street to the practice rooms in my school, I can't catch a moment of silence. On top of the usual sounds of NYC, I have a noisy neighbor. His constant noise from unusually loud parties remind me of a time where I was the noisy neighbor, an uncontrollable seven year old nuisance cooped up in a small hotel somewhere in Florida, where Gene Kelley and Donald O'Connor were my only friends.

In 1940, the Afro-Cuban tradition began right here in New York City. Machito and his Afro-Cubans, under the direction of maestro Mario Bauza, fused the harmonic sophistication of jazz with the rhythmic complexity of Afro-Cuban music. The Afro Cuban Jazz Orchestra Ensemble explores that rich legacy with a repertoire that encompasses the past, present, and future of the genre. The ensemble performs once a month at the Nuyorican Poets Café and every semester in a school concert featuring a renowned guest soloist.
