In this sermon, Pastor Blake Templeton teaches from Nehemiah 6–7 on how to persevere when God’s work gets hard. Nehemiah faced deception, intimidation, and opposition while rebuilding Jerusalem’s wall, yet he remained focused on the work God had given him. We are challenged to persevere by recognizing the enemy’s tactics and refusing to be distracted by lies, division, intimidation, or anxiety; relying on the Lord rather than our own strength for the wisdom, peace, and endurance we need; and surrounding ourselves with God’s people who can encourage, pray for, counsel, and help us finish well. Ultimately, our perseverance is rooted in Christ. Nehemiah’s work was a temporary restoration, but Jesus accomplished the ultimate work of reconciliation through His death and resurrection. God has no “plan B” for restoring, renewing, and rebuilding lives and communities - you are His “plan A.” In Nehemiah 5, we see how selfishness and the love of money can hinder God’s work, while godly leadership confronts sin, pursues repentance, and seeks to restore what has been broken.

Nehemiah’s leadership was shaped by the fear of God, leading him to lay aside personal privilege and serve sacrificially. In the same way, Jesus gave Himself for us, and our response to His grace should be a life marked by generosity, service, and sacrifice. We don’t serve to earn salvation; we serve from the salvation we’ve received.

When God transforms our hearts, it changes how we live and how we see the needs around us. Like the early church in Acts 2, our generosity and service can become a powerful witness to the gospel. In Nehemiah 4, Pastor Spence reminds us that spiritual opposition is real, but God has given us what we need to stand firm and continue His work. When doubt, discouragement, and cultural pressures threaten our faith, we’re called to pray, guard, and build. Through prayer, we fix our eyes on our great and awe-inspiring God.
