As we move through the book of Exodus, we arrive at a very special chapter which helps us define our relationship with God. Exodus 19 gives us this beautiful message of grace that says we belong to Him and that our living unto God is not the basis for our relationship but it is the evidence of it.

As we continue our study of Exodus, we arrive at the well-known story of Moses receiving advice from his father-in-law, Jethro. Though we might read this passage and wonder what it has to do with Christians today, Jethro’s advice is some that we can all use. He says, “You and the people with you will certainly wear yourselves out, for the thing is too heavy for you. You are not able to go it alone” (18:18). Exodus 17 sees the Israelites continuing to grumble as they did in previous chapters. They ask Moses, “Why did you bring us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?” God has a solution to their trouble which foreshadows the ultimate solution to all of our troubles. Through Moses he tells the people, “Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb, and you shall strike the rock, and water shall come out of it, and the people will drink.” Give a listen to our latest sermon and see the way in which this passage points to Christ, the rock of our salvation.

After God leads the Israelites out of Egypt, they sing a beautiful song of praise recorded in Exodus 15; however, it’s not long before the grumbling begins in the wilderness and God’s mercies forgotten. Rob helps us to see from this narrative that we are the same type of people - sinful beyond imagination, but in Christ Jesus loved beyond what we could dream.

In dividing the Red Sea and leading the Israelites through, God gives us a paradigm for salvation that is consistent with the rest of scripture as it pertains to our own salvation - that we are saved by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, and all for the glory of God alone. During a special Sunday in which two new men were ordained and installed as elders, we looked at the good shepherd in John 10. In speaking of himself, Jesus shows us what it looks like to shepherd others. He knows, leads, feeds, protects, pursues, invites, and cares for his sheep. And this is very much he charge given to our new elders, that they would follow the example of Jesus and that we as a congregation would submit to their leadership, pray for them, and thank them for their service.

While Christmas is a time of the utmost joy, the reality is that even with that joy many of us have heavy hearts. We feel burdened by our sin and the weight of life. For this, though, Christ gives us Himself and His church. We hope you will be encouraged and edified by this last message of 2018.
