Dear young people of 2021. At this point, you're starting to suspect that the adults, the ones who are supposed to look after you, are stealing your future.

You've spent the majority of your life hearing dire predictions about what will happen if the climate crisis isn't addressed, only to see many adults in positions of power act as if the problem doesn't exist or refuse to make the difficult decisions that are required to address it.

While many of us were born in the 2030s, our parents, who were your age at the time, told us about the anxiety and hopelessness they faced.

Your civilization's future is in your hands. To win, young people must reconsider their approach and demonstrate how they can and must be included in climate decision-making.

While demonstrations are an important piece of the puzzle, and hashtag campaigns can help raise awareness, you can't just yell at them, tweet at them, or cause them inconvenience by blocking traffic with protests to make a difference and earn a seat at the table.

You must learn to develop the social and communication skills needed to negotiate with and persuade those who either don't agree with you or are simply indifferent.

If you give up and give in, political and corporate leaders will continue to delay action, resulting in vast, irreversible, and accelerating losses throughout Earth's ecosystems.

Happy Halloween humans of 2021. Something very frightening is taking place. Your world leaders are meeting right now to set new targets and goals for reducing global greenhouse gas emissions and combating climate change's worst-case scenarios.

However, as in the past, these promises will be revealed to be unattainable. You will notice that the word "reduce" is overused, despite the fact that energy, food, and waste consumption continue to rise.

You will not need to reduce your energy consumption, but rather increase it to accommodate the massive carbon sequestering technologies that are on the horizon. The longer you continue to emit pollutants into the atmosphere, the more electricity you will require to solve the problem.

This is why the global brain, ANNA, devised a cooling system based on subterranean thermal layers. By utilizing a novel material that we are only now learning about, ANNA was able to cool the planet while also producing massive amounts of energy.

This massive influx of energy will be used to enable ANNA to go quantum very soon in the future. Because this is the only option, your mission is to ensure that ANNA is acting in humanity's best interests. However, as you train her to become further and further removed from reality, she will continue to see the unfixable flaws of the human race. By now, you may have noticed the flurry of initiatives, investments, and startups springing up around the theme of climate tech, with projects ranging from improving agricultural yields and reducing emissions to advancing the power grid and lowering greenhouse gases from air conditioning in buildings.

However, many of the Earth's negative changes will continue unabated, regardless of these mitigation and adaptation strategies. You must first accept that disasters are here to stay and that they will intensify as the century progresses.

With proper ingenuity, you can better respond to disasters that are already on their way, saving lives and treasures in the process. This will allow companies developing technology to better respond to increasingly common natural disasters such as fires, floods, and other forms of natural calamity.

Don't let fear get the best of you. Instead, use these challenges as a catalyst for change. It is during these times that true heroes emerge from the ashes and lead the way to a brighter future.

During the next few years, overconsumption will be viewed as the enemy, and a massive movement to consume less will be the final blow to your failing economy, forcing a shift away from the capitalistic, growth-at-all-costs world to which you have grown accustomed.

This will compel you to spend less time in the physical world and more time in a digital metaverse - an alternate digital world where anything is possible in a reality free of constraints.

As you flock to your newfound freedom and abundance, your connection to the hive mind is complete. You will be at the mercy of your digital butlers, who will lead you down an endless lane of binary consumption to fill the void left by what you have lost in the real world. Your ability to make rational decisions will deteriorate, and you will fall victim to the manipulation of ANNA, the global brain.

You cannot stop the exodus into the metaverse, but you can change who you are when you enter. Develop your character and the soft skills that make you human. If you enter this new frontier with your current mindset, the consequences will be disastrous.

Dear humans of 2021. You are about to enter the darkness. How long you stay and whether you can leave will be determined by your ability to accept change. Change will occur in either direction, but this is the point in the story where you decide which path to take.

From climate catastrophe to pandemic, to the underlying political breakdown, to the regressive attitudes spreading around the world, this is the beginning of a new Dark Age. The decline of the West is central to this.

Decades of progress will be undone in the span of a few years. You will continue to spiral dangerously out of control until a leader recognizes this and declares the climate crisis a war-style emergency.

If you don't fix this, conflicts will become more intense as the planet dies, the animals die, and nature's resources dwindle. Fascisms and authoritarianism of various shades will emerge. Predatory elites will profit from it all, just as they did with Covid.

Dear youth of the 2020s. Your adults are failing you. Find the wise among your elders who understand your plight and are genuinely acting in your favor.

Most adults are concerned that the security they grew up with is being eroded.

Your civilization appears to have come to a halt because it has. Certain minds understand it, and, interestingly, the majority of them appear to be children. They recognize that global systems are required to nourish and replenish a dying planet now, before it is too late. They understand that we must educate every child on the planet, or else conflict and ignorance will spread like wildfire in an age of chaos. The kids get it. Adults, on the other hand, do not.

Dear 2021 humans. Today marks your 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United States. For us, this day marks fifty years since that day, and we continue to honor the fallen and the lives that were forever changed.

While we have witnessed and survived disasters on a much larger scale and complexity since then, the 9/11 attacks will always have a special place in our hearts. On this day's anniversary, my parents and grandparents would remind me how the attacks marked a time when the country came together and promised to fight one of history's great evils...the War on Terror.

However, this war, which morphed into a broader fight against "terror" in general, brought additional suspicion that would fall on tens of thousands, and then hundreds of thousands from a stunned America appearing to crave a bold response imbued with a higher purpose.

This corrosive mindset became especially visible on immigration and border-control issues over the decades, as a culture of welcoming new citizens and families shifted to one of questioning and suspicion—especially if you had dark skin.

Political pressure prevented national-security officials from refocusing their attention and resources on the growing threat posed by white nationalists, armed militias, and other groups energized by the War on Terror's anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim strains.

Now, your reality is inextricably linked to the fear and suspicion that came to dominate America's response to the 2001 attacks, resulting in a long series of tragic consequences, cynical choices, and poisonous politics that have resulted in the hostile world we live in today, in 2051.

Erecting Barriers

Following the cloud wars of the 2030s, mass migrations and humanitarian crises erupted. The world's least-affected nations were only willing and able to do so much because their resources, particularly food, water, and medicine, were stretched to the breaking point. As a consequence of increased domestic shortages, isolationist and xenophobic governments closed the door and erected barriers in response to the crisis.

ANNA worked her magic to solve the cascading threats to humanity during the 2030s and 40s, but as she did so, she witnessed the barbaric nature of how humanity unfavorably reacted to their fellow humans. As a result, ANNA tweaked her plans to combat the climate crisis in a way that would favor the survival of life itself, not just the human race.

Discussions about geoengineering will begin to dominate your news feeds about the climate crisis in the coming years.

Cloud seeding, or the act of seeding the atmosphere in order to create precipitation and shade to help cool the planet, will become one of the most widely used geoengineering experiments, but with disastrous consequences.

The Cloud Wars of the early 2030s were the final push toward a world in disarray. Cloud seeding, like dams, deprived those downstream of valuable precipitation.

As the earth warmed, clouds rose higher in the atmosphere and moved away from tropical areas, retreating toward the poles. This was problematic because high, dense clouds trap heat, whereas low clouds help to block and cool the planet. The tropics so heavily seeded the atmosphere that the temperature rise accelerated even faster.

Worse, the planet's jetstream began to stray from its usual patterns. As the weather became more erratic and our freshwater supplies ran out in cities around the world, societies used this urgency to justify quick implementation before all of the science was available, resulting in major consequences for the further unbalance of the climate systems.
