At Christmas, God's people rejoice that the Word became flesh, that Jesus Christ was born truly God and truly human. So come to the manger and see the eternal Son of God born in time as the son of Mary so that in flesh he might free you from the bondage of sin! Come and see why this Child was born to save you! Come and see the great gift of God’s love for you!

On Christmas night, Jesus is born because God so loves you—yes, sinful, broken, hurting, hopeless, feeling like I’ve lost my faith you. Christmas is proof that God loves the world, that God loves even you. Peer into the manger and hear what these words of our Savior mean, “God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” Peer into the manger and see God’s unconditional love for the world, God’s unconditional love for you.

We’re almost there! The celebration of our Savior’s first coming is coming soon! The Light sent to shatter the darkness of guilt and unbelief and death is almost here. Yet there is still so much darkness in our world, so much darkness in our lives, so much darkness in our hearts. Such darkness makes it easy to get pessimistic and doubt God's ability to keep his promises. Yet into our darkness, God sends Jesus—our Savior, our Immanuel, our God with us. Rejoice for the Light is coming soon...really!

An Advent sermon on Matthew 11:2-11 preached at King of Kings Lutheran Church in Maitland, FL on December 15, 2019

When you are in the dark and are unsure about where to go, you look for even the smallest glimmer of light to guide you through the darkness. As Christians, we live in a world filled with the deep darkness of sin and death. In fact, our sinful natures leave us in darkness. So we need to look to the Light, which shows us what is in our path and where our path is headed to safety and life. God’s prophet Isaiah directs us to the light of the coming Christ. We look to that Light with repentant hearts. We look to that Light with eager hope.

It’s time to prepare for his coming, to remove the rags of darkness and put on the armor of light!

For the past month, we have seen that Christ has welcomed us into his home and made us part of this family. Today, we see that this is a royal family. Our brother Jesus is King. He is more than a figurehead. Christ rules over all creation for the benefit of his family. He promises us that one day we will enjoy his kingdom in full.

Is the church more of a country club or a hospital? Is a Christian community full of people who have it all together, whose lives are perfectly in line with God’s will? Or is the family of God an assembly of individuals who are all flawed and broken in multiple ways? Scripture answers that question. God’s Word tells us everyone within the church was at one point deeply lost. What changed that? How were we “found”? Amazing grace! God, in his grace, sought us out, called us to faith, adopted us into his family, and welcomed us home into his Church.

Think of what this means. If the church is a collection of people who were lost in their sin, it is unrealistic to think that in the church everyone will be a perfect model of righteous behavior. No one is like that except Jesus! Our salvation is an accomplished fact. Yet our Christian life is going to be one that often takes two steps forward and then at least one step back.

This is another reason we need Christian community! As a loving Christian family, we love and forgive one another. We proclaim God’s forgiveness to one another. When a brother or sister begins to drift away, we strive to bring them back home.

Twenty-one billion dollars. That is how much Americans spend annually on home security. We want our homes to be a place that our family can feel safe, where they can be apart from everything that can hurt them. 

However, the reality is that no matter how many locks and alarms and cameras you might use to guard your house, you and your family are not perfectly safe. There is a greater danger than thieves…greater threat than bullies. There is even something worse than physical death. The Last Day is coming, and with it, the destruction of all creation. If that day comes and you are not prepared, you begin an eternal nightmare. 

In the Church, our brother Jesus has given us a home that is indeed perfectly safe. Not even the Last Day can touch it. Christians can look forward to the Last Day with great anticipation. Even as “the mountains fall into the heart of the sea” (Psalm 46:2), we have Christ’s promise that we will be perfectly safe.
