One of the joys of being home is that you can be yourself. Out in the world, we do all we can to hide our faults and failings. You might fear your boss knowing your secrets because you could lose your job. You might fear your neighbors knowing your personal issues because they might put their house up for sale. Yet in a healthy family, people still love us in spite of our faults.
As a young man, Martin Luther thought of himself as God’s slave. That left him terrified of God. Luther believed God was a terrifying taskmaster, looking for every possible reason to punish him. Yet as Luther studied God’s Word, he realized that God is a loving Father. God does not pretend that we have no brokenness or sin. In fact, he paid for it all by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, his Son. God’s Word says that through faith in Christ, we are completely forgiven. We are part of God’s own family—a family where we are loved in spite of our faults.
God’s undeserved love not only frees us from the fear of condemnation and punishment. That grace of God frees us to live a better, more grace-filled life. We want to live as God’s children. We want to love one another just as our Father loves us.
