  • Ep 16 with Rob Goodwin: Artist, Designer & Maker

    Artist | Designer | Maker

    • You can also watch this episode on Youtube where English, Italian and Spanish subtitles are available or visit the Metralla Rosa website for more details.

Rob Goodwin is an extraordinary artist and a fantastic example of what it means to be born and bred with the belief that having London as your main source of creative inspiration and stylistic reference brings.

Rob began his career as a designer almost by accident, which is perhaps why his pieces are so easy to admire, yet so hard to pigeonhole. His visions are full of both fantasy and epic conspiracies that take you places without allowing you the time to acknowledge the inherent contradictions between his medieval and futuristic visions that create, in turn, unprecedented aesthetic discoveries.

Specialising in unique and inimitable leather pieces with elaborate artisanal detail, his creations are imbued with selfless dedication and a sophisticated attention to detail.

His creations have been worn by celebrities such as Madonna, Rihanna and Angelina Jolie, and have also been exhibited in art galleries, included in editorials of fashion and trend magazines, filmed in international commercials and starred in exquisite theatrical productions.

It is however, thanks to the histrionic nature of his pieces, that Rob has recently started an interesting career as an accessory designer for high-status film productions, and in this conversation Rob tells us in great detail how Hollywood came into his life, how he has survived moments of intense artistic doubt and what it’s like to gallop between Prague and London.

This conversation is an ode to the fragility that exists in the heart of every incorruptible creator. Listen to it in order to reconsider your own doubts and reconnect with the nobility of your own aspirations, ambitions and dreams. It will certainly be worth it.

    And now, enjoy the interview!

  • Ep 14 with Iluá Hauck da Silva: Artist & art historian

    Visual Artist | Art Historian

    • You can also watch this episode on Youtube where English, Italian and Spanish subtitles are available or visit the Metralla Rosa website for more details.

Born in Campinas, Brazil, Iluá lives and creates her works in London, where she has lived for over half of her life, which is precisely why it’s so difficult to decide whether she is a Brazilian artist living in the U.K. or a British artist born accidentally in Brazil.

Iluá is a conceptual artist whose work is predominantly figurative and whose aesthetic visions often present strong connections with anatomy, making use of the human body as an expression of existence made real.

She places the human condition under a magnifying glass, which is probably why her practice speaks of complex semiotic narratives. The many layers of her work lead us towards an understanding and exploration of the faith and symbolism present in both Christianity and the universality of mythological archetypes.

Many of Iluá’s works are three dimensional, and in this interview she explains not only her love of working with glass, but also the pleasure she finds in solving the technical problems she encounters on the journey from the birth of a concept to the materialisation of the piece. Our meandering encounter was as revealing as it was seductive. Her train of thought knows no shortcuts and, after listening to her reflect – with such assertiveness, grace and wisdom – about her art and her life, you will be grateful that she has not skimped on any of the details.

Discover her first artistic memories, the way in which her Neo-Gothic dandyism is entwined within her London life, the communion that exists between her voluptuously-baroque, intellectual nature and the almost minimalist neatness of her work.

Also discover how the destructive aspects of vanity have inspired one of her favourite glass sculptures, how the baroque nature of colonial Brazil gains expression through her stylistic passions, and how her most recent exhibition at the College of Optometrists has allowed her to engage with the martyrdom of Santa Lucia from an unexpected, autobiographical perspective.

If, like us, you believe that there is nothing more fascinating than the indomitable ambition of a cultured, intellectually restless and irreverently sophisticated woman, then this conversation will, undoubtedly, be an elixir for your senses.

    And now, enjoy the interview!

  • Ep 13 with Trisha Goddard: TV presenter & mental health activist

TV Presenter | Producer | Mental Health Activist

    • You can also watch this episode on Youtube where English, Italian and Spanish subtitles are available or visit the Metralla Rosa website for more details.

Trisha Goddard is a queen and legend of international TV. Her career began in Australia where she quickly became the country’s first black TV presenter, though not without having to face the racial discrimination that came with this well-deserved professional breakthrough.

She began her first major international on screen venture in the UK in 1998 and has since worked on many successful shows, both as a producer and presenter. Trisha now works between the United States, the United Kingdom and, occasionally, Australia.

A journalist, producer, radio and TV presenter, long-distance runner and mother, Trisha worked with Nelson Mandela shortly after giving birth to the eldest of her two daughters. She has published several books, one of them the autobiography As I Am. She survived aggressive breast cancer and has always been a vocal advocate for outreach programmes that support anxiety, depression and other disorders associated with the mind and nervous system, in order to help fight the stigma that is still attached to mental illness.

Trisha is especially known for her work as a Talk Show host and producer and as soon as you start talking to her you can see exactly why she has been so successful in dealing on all levels with people’s traumas and conflicts. She is an accessible, open, spontaneous and thoughtful woman who immediately establishes empathy with whoever she is with. She also has the gift of easily stepping into another’s shoes, due to a lifetime of having to deal with her own extreme ups and downs.

It was not only a great pleasure to have the opportunity to talk to Trisha Goddard about her personal life and her impressive, multifaceted career, but it also confirmed to us that true stars always share their light without their brightness dimming.

    And now, enjoy the interview!

Yet beneath her predominant exterior of joy and optimism, Dulcie possesses, above all, the courage and determination to deliver an offer that makes many happy while overcoming her own vulnerabilities and constant fears. • Ep 11 with Antonio Branco & Riccardo T: Performance artists & models

Performance Artists | Dancers | Models

    • You can also watch this episode on Youtube where English, Italian and Spanish subtitles are available or visit the Metralla Rosa website for more details.

Antonio and Riccardo are a pair of artists who explore the human body, the political readings implicit in the erotic and the transgressive possibilities of pain and pleasure throughout their performances, during which reality and fiction are constantly intertwined and challenged.

Creative allies as well as lovers in life, the two have created a visual language that questions social convention, the paradigms of established norms, moral authority and the censoring mechanisms of power.

Their bodies are the ground on which Antonio and Riccardo create, and with them they express their challenge on conservative and stagnant views of art and beauty.

This conversation sees them express their views on their personal and professional experiences with a fascinating fluidity and intelligence. They reflect on the sometimes needless and inaccessible hermeticism of modern art, on monogamy, on gender stereotypes, on patriarchy, on the pros and cons of sharing a wardrobe and on the future of London as the capital of the European avant-garde.

Antonio and Riccardo are fabulous on their own, so imagine what they’re like when they get together for a high-voltage conversation. In fact, don’t imagine it: Carla brings them together in this edition of Metralla Rosa so we can all to be seduced by their irreverence.

  • Ep 08 with artist Nick Cuthell

    Artist

    • You can also watch this episode on Youtube where English, Italian and Spanish subtitles are available or visit the Metralla Rosa website for more details.

Nick Cuthell is a figurative artist from New Zealand with a modern image and a direct and frank manner – yet we could easily imagine him dressed in 19th century fashion walking the streets of London or Florence. This invisible link to the past may be exactly what informs his style of art, which is distinctly realistic and in keeping with the European impressionist and neoclassical portraiture tradition of the 1800s.

His gentle eyes are especially good at capturing genuine refinement and beauty, and for this Nick relies on the traditional painting techniques known as ‘Alla Prima‘, or ‘L’Atelier‘, where students learn directly from maestros.

Nick has a sweet tendency to recreate aesthetic and ethical virtue through his paintings. Like a modern-day gentleman trying to rescue a beautiful painting tradition, his very presence calls for serenity, and for a validation of beauty that exists only in what is evoked with purified simplicity and unquestionable dignity.

Nick has been fortunate enough to be able to portray prominent contemporary personalities such as the renowned British actor Ian Mckellen, as well as other actors from the film ‘The Hobbit‘. He was also asked to paint the cast of ‘Waiting for Godot‘ by the Theatre Royal Haymarket. He has portrayed writer Martin Sherman, British/Nigerian actress Gloria Onitiri, and most recently Georgina Beyer, the world’s first openly transgender woman with the rank of mayor and later, member of the New Zealand parliament. However, for obvious reasons, it is his portrait of the current queen, Elizabeth II, commissioned by The New Zealand Portrait Gallery that was the great turning point of his career.

Carla and Nick share a beautiful relationship of mutual cooperation and silent approval for the human and professional, which is why this interview has an aura of friendship pervading everything it touches. This episode of Metralla Rosa is a delightful, gentle walk through the life of a painter that should not be missed.
