Angela Merkel says we have to ban hate speech in order to preserve free speech. That’s like burning down the house to save the house. Journalist Andy Ngo gets temporarily banned by Twitter for stating “objective facts” that Twitter deems “hateful.” So now facts can be imbued with emotion like hate?

Bloomberg News will not be covering, investigating or otherwise reporting on Michael Bloomberg’s presidential run. And interestingly, they have extended that same courtesy to the other Democratic presidential candidates. The reporters’ union at Bloomberg is upset and has filed a protest over the ban. The question is, should reporters from Bloomberg be prevented from covering their boss, who is now running for public office?

While the elections were for “municipal councilors” who really don’t have much authority, the Hong Kong elections were a stunning defeat for President Xi of China and a strong show of support by average Hong Kongers for the protestors. The United States and President Trump should continue to support the freedom movement in Hong Kong, even in trade talks with China.

Wednesday night’s Democrat presidential candidate debate exposed the fissure between the two parties. Democrats are advocating socialist, planned economy policies while Republicans are still the party of free-market policies. But no one is pointing out those differences or admitting what Democrats are truly proposing.

A judge in Florida granted a search warrant allowing the widespread search of DNA databases to try and solve a criminal case. Despite some terms of service requiring customers to consent to the release of their DNA to law enforcement, those same terms of service allow the companies to release your data if it is in accordance with a duly-issued search warrant. What if you get caught up in a false-positive match? Now you have to expend significant resources to prove you’re not the criminal. Still believe that you have “nothing to hide?"

Michael finds an old article that talks about the costs of “saving just one life.” Denver has a program called Vision Zero that seeks to reduce traffic fatalities to zero. That is an unrealistic goal that results in public cynicism, but makes people “feel good” because of the loftiness of the goal. But that is not how you set public policy..

Michael spent the weekend listening and reading about the impeachment proceedings. It finally boiled down to two Wall Street Journal columnists: Peggy Noonan and Kimberly Strassel. Peggy focused on style; Kimberly on substance. It summed up the entire process for me. This is about politics, not the serious business of removing a President from office. This is about damaging the 2020 GOP nominee, Donald Trump.
