Infrastructure in Michigan needs to be rebuilt and oftentimes governments are cash-strapped for roads, bridges, water and wastewater, and other public works. How P3s (Public-Private Partnerships) are being utilized to meet the challenges faced by municipalities will be presented by the National Council for Public-Private Partnerships (NCPPP) at their P3 Showcase in Lansing on December 3, 2019, to be held at Lansing's Henry Center for Executive Development.

The Lansing Board of Water & Light will host the Regional Water Tapping Competition tomorrow, Wednesday November 6. The three member teams will race against the clock to be the fastest team to simulate a new house water service installation with as few violations, including minor leaks and safety risks, as possible. The simulation includes installing a copper line and adding an on-off valve at the water main and curb stop.

This was held Wednesday, November 6 at 1pm, at BWL Water Department, 730 E. Hazel St. Building G, Lansing, featuring BWL Men’s Waterdog Tappers and BWL Women’s Lethal Ladies

The BWL Waterdog Tappers took on the men’s team from Columbus, Ohio. Both BWL’s Lethal Ladies and the Columbus men’s team are the defending champions of the regional competition.

The BWL teams will also compete at the state competition held in Lansing in February. The winners of the men’s and women’s teams overall will then compete representing the State of Michigan at the national competition in Orlando, Florida in June 2020.

Jeffrey Mosher catches up with MVCA, (Michigan Venture Capital Association), in the days leading up to their 2019 Annual Awards Dinner.

Ara shares about the association headquarter's recent move from Ann Arbor to Novi, MI, a community he is familiar with from his days in Economic Development. He notes the recent hiring of an Associate Director for the MVCA, then reviews what folks would experience during Tuesday November 12th's Awards evening. This year's event is set for the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan.

There is a great poem called the "Dash" that refers to the date we were born and the date we pass on...our lives are represented by the dash between the dates. Our visit with Phil Beavers reminds us of the focus and effort we need to make that dash count and leave a legacy that is meaningful and what we intended to do!

In recognition of Veterans Day 2019, LAFCU and Lansing Lugnuts donated $6,000 from the LAFCU Community Champions program to Lansing Community College and Baker College to help veterans further their education. Each school receives $3,000.

The funds were donated by LAFCU and Lansing Lugnuts fans who participated in an in-park promotion at Lansing Lugnuts games.

WHY: LAFCU Community Champions recognizes the importance of military service. In addition to recognizing current and veteran members of the military at Lansing Lugnuts games, LAFCU and Lansing Lugnuts created a fund for “Community Champions” to help veterans further their education. It comprises donations by LAFCU and Lansing Lugnuts fans who participated in LAFCU Launch, an in-park promotion. Fans donated $1 to the fund for each tennis ball they “launched” onto the field to win a gift card.

QUESTION: What services does CAMW! offer for veterans?

ANSWER: Twice a month, INVESTVets offers a Veterans Networking Group at our Lansing Job Center where military veterans are welcome to come network with other veterans regarding employment opportunities, job search strategies, resources, your unique experiences and more. A strong partner in helping support our veterans, INVESTVets aims to improve employment outcomes for those who have served in our nation's armed forces and their families. The next networking group will be held on Nov. 12, with another on Nov. 26, both at 3:30 p.m. There’s no need to RSVP, but you are encouraged to bring fellow veterans! Outside of those meetings, veterans and eligible spouses are always welcome to visit one of our job centers to learn more about the career services we offer specifically for them.

QUESTION: Who is considered a veteran?

ANSWER: A veteran is defined in any of the following ways:

● A person who served on active duty for a period of more than 180 days and was discharged or released from service with any discharge other than a dishonorable discharge.

● A person who was discharged or released from active duty because of a service connected disability.

● A person who served on active duty during a period of war, or in a campaign for which a campaign badge was authorized, and was discharged or released from such duty with other than a dishonorable discharge.

QUESTION: What does Priority of Service for Veterans and Eligible Spouses mean?

ANSWER: Priority of service for veterans means the right of eligible veterans and their spouses to receive access to services, resources and training before a non-covered person. Eligible covered veterans and eligible spouses are notified of this and the services we offer by signs and other information throughout our American Job Centers. We know many of our veterans don’t always feel comfortable “drawing attention” to themselves. If you are a veteran or spouse, you can quietly tell any CAMW! staff person and we’ll discreetly direct you to the best person to help you with priority services. All U.S. Department of Labor-funded programs, including CAMW!, follow the Priority of Service for Veterans and Eligible Spouses.

QUESTION: What other resources are available to veterans?

ANSWER: The Michigan Department of Military & Veterans Affairs and the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency are both governmental areas that offer wide range of veterans’ services, including workforce development. Their offerings range from education assistance, family assistance, benefits, financial assistance, health care resources, jobs and scholarships. More specifically, the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency connects those who have served in the armed forces and their families to services and benefits throughout the state. The resources for veterans are out there, and we hope to help connect people to them.
