Greg and Jason chat to midlife athlete, Jo Moseley, who in the Summer of 2019 became the first woman to stand up paddleboard, coast-to-coast, across Northern England. Jo has an amazing story of how she went from a single mum of 2 boys & non-exerciser to a world of adventure and challenges. Now Jo hopes to inspire others to take joy in any form of exercise.
The film of her paddleboard challenge - Brave Enough, A Journey Home to Joy - can be rented/purchased via https://vimeo.com/ondemand/braveenough

As Greg says at the start of this episode, we never thought we'd be chatting to a philosopher on Mid Life Athlete, but here we are chatting to Josh Habgood-Coote, who is a research fellow at the Grounds Project at Leeds University School of Philosophy.
Josh wrote an article for Aeon magazine on how Gilbert Ryle's philosophy of mind could help athletes coach themselves to improve by thinking about what and how they are doing exercise, rather than simply doing it. Here's the article for reference: https://aeon.co/essays/dont-just-do-it-think-it-too-on-learning-with-gilbert-ryle
The technique is relevant for athletes learning new techniques and as Greg pointed out particularly useful for athletes during rehab.

Keen to tie up some loose ends from previous episodes, Greg and Jason chat to Dr Daman Langguth, a leading Clinical Immunologist based in Brisbane, Australia. We delve into a heap of questions. Does the immune system decline with age? What impact does exercise have on the immune system? What can we do to boost our immune system? What impact does the menopause have? We think you'll be surprised by the answers.

A truly inspiring episode. Jason and Greg chat to adventurer Ian Holdcroft. After a negative experience, Ian decided to embark on the adventures he had always dreamed of, running ultra marathons, including a race across the Atacama desert, followed by rowing across the Atlantic. Ian is co-founder of https://shackleton.com/ and in the spirit of the famous explorer we discuss pushing your limits and being comfortable with the uncomfortable.

We've all probably heard the theory that exercise builds muscle because it breaks down the muscle fibre and then rebuilds through scar tissue. Well it turns out that's wrong.
Jason and Greg chat to Professor Eugene Terentjev and Neil Ibata of Cambridge University Cavendish Lab. Their latest research has answered how exercise builds muscle. Not only that, the physicists have built a mathematical model that predicts the amount of force or effort needed to optimize your exercise.

Greg and Jason chat to Phil Cavell about his book, The Midlife Cyclist. Phil is a co-founder and director at Cyclefit and having fitted hundreds of midlife cyclists to bikes and been a lifelong cyclist himself is well placed to talk about how we should approach cycling in our middle years. In writing the book, Phil tapped into a number of experts and has done a superb job of curating the information to expel myths and provide some practical guidance.
