  • Bringing Black history to life for young readers
Today on Midday, a conversation with two award winning authors about their efforts to bring Black history to life for young readers.
Later in the program, Carole Boston Weatherford joins us to talk about her award-winning works for young adult and children, including Kin: Rooted in Hope and Becoming Billie Holiday. She was recently named 2025 Young People’s Poet Laureate.
The conversation begins with Jonathan Eig, author of King: A Life, which won the 2024 Pulitzer Prize for biography. Now, the acclaimed book is released in an edition for young adults. Michael Long and Yohuru Williams adapted the book for younger readers. Eig and Long join Midday to discuss writing about history and education in a divisive political moment.

  • Federal workers, many of them living in Maryland, face uncertain weeks
The chaotic first three weeks of President Donald Trump's administration have led to more than 40 lawsuits challenging Executive Actions as unconstitutional or illegal.
One action with particular resonance in Maryland are efforts to reduce the federal workforce. Maryland is home to more than 300,000 federal workers. In January, an e-mail sent to 2.2 million civil servants offered an arrangement for “deferred resignation,” that would lead to their leaving the government workforce.
Last week, a judge put a stay on the offer until a hearing was held yesterday. In that hearing in Boston, U.S. District Judge George O’Toole ruled that the pause will continue while he decides whether or not to issue a temporary restraining order forbidding the administration from imposing a deadline for workers to accept the offer or face an uncertain future.
Baltimore County Councilman Pat Young joins Midday to discuss the cuts. Young's district includes the Social Security Administration and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The two agencies employ about 14,000 workers.
We are also joined by Elaine Fitch, an attorney specializing in employment law. She is the managing partner of Kalijarvi, Chuzi, Newman and Fitch in Washington, D.C.

  • A conversation with Maryland's Latino Legislative Caucus
As the General Assembly continues the 2025 session in Annapolis, we talk to the chair of the Maryland Legislative Latino Caucus.
Del. Ashanti Martinez was appointed to represent District 22 in Prince George’s County in February of 2023, filling the seat vacated by Alonzo T. Washington, who was appointed to the state Senate.
We ask Martinez about his caucus' priorities, including immigration protections and increased scrutiny of immigration enforcement in schools and other areas.
