In this Bonus Holiday Episode we are sharing the microphone today with Provisional Psychologist, Nevena Kalajdzic. Come with us as we explore our understanding of stressors during these times. As we quickly approach Christmas with all the festivities, the busy schedules, the pressures of hosting and gift giving we see how this can cause people financial stress, anxiety, and exhaustion. We tap Nevena’s knowledge to investigate how people feel the pressure to hide what they may be experiencing and not have an outlet for relief. We tour the expectations about who we think we are “supposed” to be and the challenges around setting up boundaries. Additionally, we talk to how this can bring up further stress, lower frustration tolerance and eventually lower our moods. Our hope for today’s talk is to help people to understand the different perspectives during the holidays and to realize that you’re not alone if you are feeling overwhelmed. Let’s talk about those of us that struggle to keep up with cheerful energy and share how we can gain some insight and validation about these thoughts, feelings, and sensations.
If you are struggling over the holiday season...
COPING:
1. Check in with your thoughts, feelings, and sensations; try to ground yourself in the present moment (e.g., body scan exercise)
2. Name your feelings (e.g., talk to someone or write it down) - we need to be able to acknowledge and be open to experiencing uncomfortable feelings to get through them
3. Slow down and take a few deep breaths
4. Go outside – we crave sunshine, especially in the winter
5. Move your body any way you like: walk, gym, yoga, dance, etc.
6. Try to eat a balanced diet
7. Practice gratitude – writing it down into a journal, into your phone or just thinking about it can help us shift our mood
8. Manage your self-talk – try to be kind with yourself and patient with how you are feeling
9. Reward yourself – massage, book, movie
10. Talk to someone you trust and feel comfortable with
11. Get enough sleep/rest
