  • 01.09.18. Fire and Fury in the New Year
This week on Middle Theory, the Sentinels return for 2018 to examine issues that include gas pumping laws, marijuana legalization, and the explosive release of the book "Fire and Fury" on Trump's first year in office. HELLO. This week on Middle Theory, we get back in the saddle after taking a break for the Holidays, and catch up on everything that happened in the world (which, remarkably, has continued spinning after the trials of the year 2017 A.D.), including revelations that President Trump threatened to have a good idea back in October, only to be reined in and put back on Twitter by someone in his own administration. Meanwhile, in the “news that never seems to end” category, we discuss the new FBI investigation into The Clinton Foundation. The big story is the ongoing controversy around Michael Wolff’s new book Fire and Fury and the political, media, and the adversarial fallout that the Trump administration and Breitbart founder Steve Bannon are experiencing because of it. While President Trump has bravely stepped up to the plate in the aftermath of this to reassure the world of his mental stability, there are some who seem to place less confidence in his tweets. Before getting to the MID, we cover a number of other topics including Oregon’s new Self Serve gas station allowances, which may end up causing complete societal collapse if early reactions to the news are any indication. We then spend time discussing Attorney General Jeff Sessions and his possible political motivations for rolling back President Obama’s non-interference memos that stopped federal intervention within States that loosened the legal grip on marijuana. Is it a clever political move to shore up support on the conservative right in the wake of further destabilization in the White House? Or is it because someone with great power and influence in the American legal system actually believes that smoking a joint will bring a teenager through the gateway into Skid Row and start shooting heroin into his eyeball? Time will be the judge of this. We wrap up the episode by confirming that yes, your smartphone is indeed spying on you, according to Alphonso CEO Ashish Chordia, who admits that his company has produced over 1,000 apps that record and transmit audio from smartphone microphones in order to provide targeted advertising to users. The final words are reserved for Oprah Winfrey, the one-time proposed running mate of President Trump, and now potential opponent for the 2020 race. Her stump speech at the Golden Globes seemed to be a warning shot of her political intentions, but will she end up having to explain away her association with serial sex abuser Harvey Weinstein? • 12.16.17. The Top Conspiracies of 2017
This week on Middle Theory, we begin to wind down 2017 as we look at some of the top conspiracy theories of the year. Following the surprising (or maybe not so surprising) loss of Roy Moore in Alabama's Senate election, we take time to examine a number of soundbites that detail some dirty tricks that were underway in the southern state. For instance, some voters reported receiving phone calls from a phony Washington Post reporter claiming to be offering money to women willing to pose as Roy Moore accusers. Elsewhere, CNN hosted a panel discussion in which a number of interesting views of Trump voters who don't support Moore are compared and contrasted. We then turn our attention to the subject of the recent Net Neutrality vote, and how this landmark decision may greatly change the playing field for web-based companies and web providers alike. Finally, we turn our attention to the discussion of a number of conspiracy theories and other controversial stories that have been in the headlines over the last year, which include ridiculous claims of the "Flat Earth" movement, the Las Vegas shooting, and a recent bombshell report on UFOs by the New York Times. • 12.08.17. The New Jerusalem
This week, we discuss the recent decision by President Trump to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, which has been met with controversy and debate by the international community. As the Christmas season ensues, we begin with a discussion of holiday decor, before we dive into the news, which includes discussion about Corey Feldman's 1993 audio files shared with the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office, where he named the alleged sexual predators that accosted him. The files, now finally recovered, are purportedly in the hands of the Los Angeles Police Department... we also touch on a new report released about the Charlottesville protests earlier this year, and a tragic police shooting that went horribly wrong. The big story this week, however, has to do with "The New Jerusalem"... and President Donald Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, which has caused a storm of controversy within the international community. Will the longer lasting repercussions of this be as dangerous as many are reporting, or will it be comparable to Ronald Reagan famously asking Mikhail Gorbachev to "tear down this wall"? • 11.31.17. The Purge Continues
This week on Middle Theory, in an ongoing "purge" of sexual offenders within the media and entertainment industry, allegations against anchor Matt Lauer and radio host Garrison Keillor take center stage. On this week's edition of the program, we discuss everything from the new Netflix series, "The Punisher," and the social commentary appended to it, to recent concerns following a Mac OS update, and what science has to say about men with beards (in these concerning times, a little humor is necessary, we think). Then turning our attention to North Korea and the recent launch of an advanced missile by the rogue nation, we look at this, as well as reports of defectors, and one of the most widely publicized (and sad) instances of escape from the country in recent memory. We then turn our attention to the allegations against Lauer and Keillor, as well as other names in media and entertainment. Looking back in time, renewed interest in similar allegations against Geraldo Rivera has been fueled by a controversial interview between Barbara Walters and Bette Midler from years ago. We also hear about an assault victim--and her attacker--who have co-authored a book and given TED talks about the myths and realities of sex assault. Finally, new FBI documents tell of interesting new details pertaining to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, and the motives of shooter Adam Lanza. • 11.21.17. Happy Franksgiving!
This week on Middle Theory, we celebrate Thanksgiving with a retrospective on the holiday, it's history, controversies, and why some once called it "Franksgiving." The holidays have finally rolled around... and here at Middle Theory, we're keeping an eye on the news, as well as what's been happening in the world abroad. Stories the SENTINELS here in the middle ground have been following include a missing Argentinian Submarine, as well as the death of the infamous cult leader, Charles Manson, and the banning of YouTube channels featuring crazy, creepy, or exploitative content (some of which have made millions in ad revenue over the years). Then turning our attention to the holiday at hand, how much of what we celebrate at Thanksgiving is really based on the true story of the occasion? We look at several aspects, from the pilgrims and their interactions with Native Americans, to the ways that corporate America helped shape the holiday in recent years, and much more on this special holiday edition of Middle Theory. • 11.17.17. System Purge
This week on Middle Theory, we discuss the ongoing "system purge" that continues in the wake of the Weinstein scandal, with the controversy shifting to the world of politics. Roy Moore has become one of the most controversial characters in American politics, with a contentious Senate race that is rife with allegations of sexual misconduct. Meanwhile, new allegations have similarly arisen in relation to Senator Al Franken, as well as Hollywood action star Sylvester Stallonne, in relation to existing charges dating all the way back to 1986. The result has been a continued "system purge" with the revelation of numerous accounts of alleged misconduct among members of Hollowood and government. • 11.03.17. The Fed
With Donald Trump's new nomination of Jerome Powell as head of the "The Fed" (The Federal Reserve, that is), we examine the history of America's Central Bank, and its constitutional implications. In addition to the recent release of long-classified JFK assassination files, a trove of files pertaining to the raid on Osama Bin Laden's compound have now surfaced as well, which detail some rather esoteric literature the terrorist leader had been reading. In fact, many English language books in his possession included what can be identified as 9/11 "truther" books, in addition to the similarly themed film "Loose Change." Why had Bin Laden shown such interest in conspiracy literature pertaining to the 9/11 attacks, of which he had been determined to be the mastermind? We also take time to acknowledge the recent horrible terror incident in New York, involving the  apparently radicalized immigrant who used a large truck to claim the lives of several individuals as he drove through a park. The attack came as a surprise to both the wife, and sister, of the attacker, the latter of whom had spoken to him only one day earlier. We then turn our attention to the nomination by President Trump of Jerome Powell for the head position with the Federal Reserve. We take time to look at the history of America's Central Bank, and its constitutional implications. We also take time to discuss some of the conspiratorial insinuations about the Fed, made by authors like G. Edward Griffin in his popular book, "The Creature From Jekyll Island." • 10.27.17. The JFK Files Released… Sort of
This week on Middle Theory… the “big day” has come and gone, involving the scheduled release of a trove of secret files relating to the JFK assassination in 1963. Granted, what actually made it before the public so far is only a portion of the total files in the collection, following news late yesterday that President Donald Trump, after Tweeting that the files would all be released, seemingly gave in to requests from the CIA and FBI for an additional six months to redact portions of the existing files. Esquire reported of the move that, “It appears that the president acquiesced to a demand by the spooks to hold some documents back. This is stupid and outrageous. This deadline has been out there since the Clinton administration. It is not paranoid in the least to wonder what they’re hiding now.” Hence, for the last few days, journalists and researchers around the world have been pouring over the files, which relate new details about the JFK assassination. Long kept from public view, these files--as many had hoped--do appear to offer some new details about one of the darkest days in American history. On this edition of the program, we will examine some of the most compelling new threads that have appeared so far, with the expectation that in weeks to come, additional details will be forthcoming. • 10.20.17. Trumpism… and the Opposition
This week on Middle Theory, former presidents (and presidential candidates) are speaking out against Donald Trump... the latest in a long succession of contests to "Trumpism." We begin with discussion that includes updates on the sordid Harvey Weinstein situation, with continuing allegations of misconduct surfacing, in addition to a look at the broader issue of human trafficking in America, and other parts of the world; it is arguably one of the greatest problems existing in the world today, and yet, one that so many are willing to turn a blind eye toward. Later in the program, we also hear what the latest from former presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama say about Donald Trump, along with Senator John McCain's assertions about "half-baked nationalism" under the current administration. Finally, we also review the bizarre interview featuring security guard Jesus Campos on the Ellen show, and the controversy it has managed to arouse.
