This week on Middle Theory, the horrible events that unfolded at a country music concert in Las Vegas are examined in depth. Is there more to the story behind the worst mass shooting in recent American history? With the horrible news out of Las Vegas this week, Micah and McNonymous start things off with an acknowledgement of the positive forces in so many of our lives, which are an inspiration during such times of trouble. We also look at the burgeoning market for "crypto-currencies", and finally, some of the latest news out of the UK involving Theresa May. Then turning our attention to the events unfolding in Las Vegas this week, we address a number of questions and conspiracy theories insinuated about the incident, which include some of the following: One civilian allegedly warned the crowd “you’re all gonna die” 45 minutes before the shooting... she (a hispanic woman) was escorted out by security. Reports of multiple shooters + audio analysis of the gunfire to support this. Reports that exits at the venue were blocked and people weren’t able to flee Sheriff saying repeatedly during press conferences “suspects” instead of “suspect” No security camera footage released from within hotel Was Paddock’s door open or barricaded shut? Conflicting reports Business Insider article says Campos saw Paddock’s door ajar and approached, and was then shot Every other source says door was barricaded and Campos had to pry the door open with his nightstick before Paddock began shooting Will we ever truly know the full details behind what led to this murderous act? Perhaps not... although there is at least a strong possibility that this may have been a factor: The Las Vegas Strip shooter prescribed anti-anxiety drug in June, which remains a common (though unproven) link between many similar horrific shootings in recent memory. Is it a thread worthy of being explored further? This week on Middle Theory, we look at electromagnetic pulse weapon (EMP) attacks, and whether nations like North Korea are a legitimate concern for such threats. It seems that new regulations are coming down the pipe from the Transportation Security Administration, who are changing some of the key requisites for security screenings in relation to domestic travel. Micah tells us about his own recent experiences with the TSA, and we also look at some recent incidents that may raise concerns. We also look at how countries in Canada and Mexico are cashing in on the lack of regulations about water extraction from the ground... does this essentially constitute a sort of "filtration tax" in some countries? Then we look at the frightening issues related to the potential for an electromagnetic pulse weapon (EMP) attack, and whether certain "rogue nations" like North Korea and Iran should be considered more threatening than they presently are. Could EMP attacks be the single greatest threat to America, and other nations, existent today? We say YES. This week on Middle Theory, we remember the tragic accident that claimed the life of Diana, Princess of Wales, two decades ago, as well as conspiracy theories that have lingered since her death. We kick things off by looking at the devastation occurring in the wake of Hurricane Harvey, and take time to offer details on how listeners can donate or contribute otherwise to the relief effort, in addition to learning how to spot scams that may be seeking to profit from the disaster. Then, shifting our attention to what's going on in the news, we ask, what’s going on with Martin Shkreli and Wikileaks? "Pharma Bro" Shkreli recently posted a picture of a memory stick that he claims has Hillary’s deleted emails on it, roughly coinciding with an incident where Wikileaks' website went down, with one group claiming to have hacked it (Wikileaks denies any hack occurred, and their website is back up). What connection could Shkreli have to any of this? Meanwhile, a CBS News Miami host hints that former employee of Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Imran Awan, could be the subject of a larger investigation. Allegations from conservative outlets already assert that Awan is being investigated for selling data to foreign governments; meanwhile, an online conspiracy theory suggests that a man named Mohammad Akram Awan, a resident of Maryland, could be the father (or uncle) of a man also named Imran Awan. Is there any connection here at all? To be clear, Mohammad Akram Awan is the name of a Pakistani air force pilot accused of being a Mossad double agent and jailed following the alleged assassination of Pakistani dictator Muhammad Zia ul-Haq, along with 33 others, including US Ambassador Arnold Raphel. Finally, as we mark 20 years since the tragic car accident that claimed the life of Princess Diana and her boyfriend, Dodi al Fayed, we look at her life and influence on British culture, along with the numerous conspiracy theories that have surrounded her death for decades. This week on Middle Theory, in addition to a discussion about conspiracy theories, belief in them, and media manipulation, we focus on the unrest and controversy surrounding the Antifa groups and their counter-protest activities. What is a "conspiracy theory", and why do people believe them? Is there an element of "group-think" involved here, and how does media bias pay into this? We examine the roots of conspiracy theories on this week's program, while also looking at whether there is some precedent to the idea that elements of the mainstream media is controlled, or at least influenced, by outside sources... most notably intelligence agencies. Then shifting our attention to Antifa, the anti-fascist organization launching counter-protests against white nationalists and Neo-Nazi groups in recent weeks, we ask the pertinent question of whether they are actually helping by engaging in violent confrontations, or merely adding to the chaos? Even acclaimed political commentator Noam Chomsky has decried Antifa, which led to his dismissal by many liberal commentators as being "irrelevant." However, similar contest to Antifa's actions has come from the Southern Poverty Law Center, among others. At the end of the day, is Antifa doing more harm than good? This week on Middle Theory, a recent white nationalist march in Charlottesville was met with counter protests, which resulted in one death and nineteen injuries... and in the aftermath, Donald Trump's comments became the central focus of the issue. While Trump defended his remarks on Charlottesville, saying that violence on "both sides" had been to blame, news sites like Alternet and Salon leaped at the opportunity to link white supremacists with Russia, and argued that the GOP "always" sides with the Klan and Neo Nazis. Trump, on the other hand, expressed being ‘Sad’ over removal of ‘Our Beautiful Statues’, referencing the removal of confederate memorials throughout parts of the Southern United States (although it should be noted that Roberts E. Lee, according to historical documents, was actually against erecting Confederate memorials). In a bizarre twist, we also have one of the organizing White Nationalists, Christopher Cantwell, appearing in a video online where he seems to be fighting back tears at the prospect of a warrant being issued for his arrest in relation to the death and violence that erupted at the rally. But is there a better solution to all of this? Perhaps so... hence why we look at how a group of Neo-Nazis in Belgium were recently punked, when they realized a small town where they were marching pulled a brilliant trick on them. This week on Middle Theory, we delve into the concerning exchanges between Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, which some have already compared to the Cuban Missile Crisis. We don't have to tell you how screwed up the world is right now. We're all sick of politics, prima donnas, pyramid schemes, and the poor judgement often used by world leaders. So to kick things off, The Doctor and The Professor begin by dishing on all the bullshit going on in the world, before launching into an in-depth analysis of the North Korean issue. NoKo leader Kim Jong Un is a different kind of "leader." In his world, threats of war amount to chest-beating, with a complete disregard for the consequences of his statements or actions. Arguably, this level of ego, paired with a lack of judgement, might only be remotely comparable to that of U.S. leader Donald Trump (whose actions still don't compare with the maniacal threats and actions of Kim). Finally, we take a look at the NYT's allegations about Vice President Mike Pence's alleged political aspirations, as well as private investigator Rod Wheeler's lawsuit against Fox News, who he says fabricated a story (using him as the center piece) in order to promote the Seth Rich conspiracy theories. This week on Middle Theory, John McCain, "The Maverick," makes a 'historic' tie-breaking vote that stops the GOP effort to repeal and replace Obamacare. As we look at the news this week, controversy surrounds the recent attempt to leave the country by Imran Awan, who formerly worked for Debbie Wasserman Schultz and the DNC. Awan was subsequently arrested by the FBI, in a strange development that few in the mainstream media have chosen to cover (perhaps due to the fact that he was a former consultant to CNN). Also, the newly-appointed White House Communications director, Anthony Scaramucci, made headlines recently for a vulgar rant that he went on after a reporter Tweeted a "leak" about a private dinner at the White House. Scaramucci subsequently appeared on CNN and explained what he actually meant, as his war against White House leaks continues. Then, we look at the recent vote on repealing Obamacare, the tie-breaker for which was supplied by Arizona Senator John McCain, who returned (with a standing ovation on the Senate Floor) from a recent surgery, casting a vote in defiance of the Trump administration, and in keeping with his reputation as a Maverick. Many are already predicting that this flamboyant Senate appearance will be among the Senator's most memorable.
