  • 07.22.17. So Long, Spicer
This week on Middle Theory, as Sean Spicer steps down as White House Press Secretary, we look at the contentious relationship between Donald Trump's administration and the American media. As we delve into the news this week, a contentious debate has arisen between our friends here at Middle Theory: what are the best barbecue and chicken wing spots in America? We're hoping to get clarification on this from some of our listeners. In other news, we take a moment to remember the Chester Bennington, late singer of rap-rock group Linkin Park, and take a moment to examine the possible connections between his suicide, and similar circumstances involving singer Chris Cornell's death. Also, Senator John McCain has, according to his doctor in an interview with CNN, been diagnosed with brain cancer, which might explain his unusual exchange with James Comey a number of weeks ago. Speaking of Senator John McCain, Marc Turin, whether or not you've heard of him, is someone that should be of interest to listeners. McNonymous takes a moment to tell us the unique story of this Arizona dropout turned arms dealer. Finally, our MID story this week deals with the departure of Sean Spicer from his position as White House Press Secretary. We take time to examine how this, and the controversial appointment of Anthony Scaramucci as White House Communications Director, indicates the broader problems between the current administration, and the American media. • 07.16.17. Collusion!
This week on Middle Theory, while questions remain about Donald Trump and potential collusion in the 2017 election, the best evidence thus far may have just been revealed willingly by Donald Trump Jr. There is a serious disturbance in space-time this week... and a gender-bending twist in one of the longest-running science fiction franchises in history. That's right, the BBC has announced that the lead role in the upcoming season of BBC's Doctor Who has been given to actress Jodie Whittaker of Broadchurch fame. As the UK's entertainment industry breaks one of its final "glass ceilings", we look at what this has to do with other world affairs, and even Hillary Clinton's loss in the 2016 US election. Elsewhere (and speaking of time travel), anachronisms continue to arise, which McNonymous points out seemed to have given clues as much as a century ago to the eventual Presidency of Donald Trump. This, and other newsworthy items are discussed, leading up to the big story this week: has Donald Trump Jr. finally provided clear evidence of collusion with Russia? Many say so, although opinions are divided as to whether this is the "smoking gun", or if it's merely one of many bungled attempts at gaining an upper hand during the last election, which, under other circumstances, indeed might have qualified as collusion. Elsewhere on the subject of possible collusion with foreign governments, Representative Adam Schiff is playing down the notion that his party might have done the same thing... but is "collusion" at any level still representative of treachery at the end of the day? • 07.07.17. G20: The Handshake
This week on Middle Theory, the world watches as President Donald Trump meets with Russian leader Vladimir Putin at the 2017 G20 summit. As we begin our foray into the biggest news in the world this week, we ask ourselves whether CNN is in trouble after threatening a man behind a viral GIF in circulation featuring Donald Trump in a wrestling ring. Elsewhere, a massive new FOIA document release has shown how the scripts of more than 1,800 films and television shows have been influenced by the CIA and the Pentagon, ranging from espionage films like the popular James Bond movies, to superhero flicks like Iron Man; less obvious examples include Top Chef, American Idol, and others. But the big story this week involves the 2017 G20 Summit, and the historic meeting between President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin. As the world watches, questions remain about Trump, his previous relationship with Russia, and the raging controversy about potential collusion in the 2017 election. • 06.30.17. Trump’s Twitter-Tantrum
This week on Middle Theory, for some reason Donald Trump's latest "Twitter-Tantrum" are the leading story in the news (again). What does the ongoing saga of our commander in chief's social media activity tell us about him, his mental state, and the country at large? While the furor over "Trump Tweets" rages on, there have been actual things going on in the news, which include developments with the Senate Health Care Bill, as well as a Supreme Court ruling in favor of Donald Trump's travel ban. We also look at a European Human Rights court that decreed a baby in England should die with dignity, rather than be released into parental care for experimental treatments. Okay, okay... but getting all that "important stuff" out of the way so we can return to everyone's morbid fascination with Trump's Tweeting habits, the President came under fire for the latest in a vile string of insults, this time hurtled at MSNBC host Mika Brzezinski, along with her co-host Joe Scarborough. Could it actually be, just maybe, that this entire thing is being overblown by the media? On the other hand, are there legitimate things we learn about Trump, his presidency, and social media in general from careful discussion and analysis of this mess? • 06.23.17. Philando Castile: Justice Served?
This week on Middle Theory, we begin by looking at the movement to have the United Nations ban cultural appropriation, in an effort to enforce that ever-fine-line between appreciation, and appropriation. But should things like yoga be considered "cultural appropriation", in addition to themes and symbolism we see in popular films, music, and other media? We then turn our attention to the conspiratorial beliefs of the late rap artist Prodigy, who had been working on a documentary involving the Illuminati at the time of his passing. Then after the break, we give an overview of the recent acquittal of officer Geronimo Yanez, who fired seven shots at Philando Castile during a routine traffic stop in Minneapolis, Minnesota last year. Has justice been served, with the complete acquittal of the officer responsible for the death of Philando Castile, an innocent man, who had been attempting to be compliant with the officer by telling him he had a weapon in his vehicle? Finally, if you aren't the proud owner of the Amazon Echo yet, maybe you could be persuaded if the voice, rather than the popular AI "Alexa", were instead "Alexa Jones". Allow the hilarity to ensue... • 06.16.17. Bases Loaded
This week on Middle Theory, we kick things off by remembering that most famous ancient Chinese curse (which may or may not actually be an authentic, ancient Chinese curse, but nonetheless... ). Our discussion moves from talk of Oliver Stone's recent series of interviews with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, to government surveillance, domestic spying, and the "War on Terror". We also highlight a piece of "secret audio" produced by Alex Jones of InfoWars, who secretly recorded calls he had with Megyn Kelly... the latter of whom is in the midst of losing sponsors due to fallout after the announcement of the interview. The focus of our discussion, however, is on the shooting incident involving members of Congress at a Washington baseball field earlier this week, where a disgruntled Bernie Sanders supporter took lethal action against a member of Congress and several staffers. Fortunately no one was killed, except from the shooter himself, James Hodgkinson. What do we learn from a terrible incident like this, and how does media spin and "contrived controversy" in American politics contribute to these problems? • 06.08.17. Sweet Baby James
This week on Middle Theory, we cover the testimony given by former FBI director James Comey, given before the Senate Intelligence Committee on June 8, 2017. Kicking things off, we pick up where we left off last week with an update on the Evergreen State College situation, which includes the release of a 911 call audio where a purported gunman (later deemed to be not credible) threatened to visit the campus with a weapon. This brings us to further discussion about social justice issues and race relations in America; to contrast this, we take a look back to the 1990s, and the famous Waco Texas, Ruby Ridge, and Oklahoma Federal Building incidents. Then, we turn our attention to Megyn Kelly's interview with Vladimir Putin, and how the views between "East and West" continue to contrast and conflict. However, the big news of the day involves the testimony given by former FBI director James Comey, given before the Senate Intelligence Committee on June 8, 2017. We give a complete breakdown of the highlights, and the big takeaways from the hearing, as well as some of the analysis that followed. Has James Comey fundamentally changed the playing field as it relates to the ongoing controversies with President Donald Trump? • 06.02.17. Paris Climate Accord: Like a “Covfefe” In the Night
This week on Middle Theory, we analyze the decision by President Trump for the United States to leave the Paris Climate Accord. Stop the presses... can YOU figure out the TRUE meaning of "Covfefe"? Apparently, this obvious misspelling by The Donald was worthy of countless articles and news segments over the last several days... we spend an equally ludicrous amount of time talking about why this is utter bullshit. Then turning our attention to other, more meaningful things, we spend some time examining the current crisis at Evergreen State College, where a group of students have shut the campus down after a white professor refused to accept an "invitation" for all white members of the student body and faculty to leave campus... which in their eyes, makes him a racist. Then, we look at the controversial decision by President Trump for the United States to leave the Paris Climate Accord, which has aroused varied responses from the international community, including newly elected French President Emanuel Macron. Van Jones also chimed in on this, as we visit audio soundbytes with reactions to the decision, as well as a complete breakdown given by McNonymous about the "environmental hypocrisy" of several organizations and individuals that have decried the decision. Finally... Hillary Clinton might have pushed her luck a little too much with the post-election loss "sympathy train," after she said during an interview with ReCode that she was a "victim of the assumption she would win." She further suggests a broad reaching "right wing conspiracy" that involves Russia, Wikileaks, InfoWars, and possibly members of the Trump campaign might have conspired to thwart her chances at winning the 2016 election. Here are a few of the responses from the liberal media in response to Clinton's somewhat plausible, but still unproven claims: “Well she first of all, really drilled down on the fake news, the role of Infowars and said that it was very clear to her that there were Americans directing and colluding, conspiring really, with the Russian hackers, with Guccifer, with the others who were involved in the hacking, in the dropping of WikiLeaks … and saying that they were doing so with such political sophistication. She’s basically pointing to the Trump campaign, saying that the dots are now being connected in the investigation. So, she is drawing a conspiracy theory,” Mitchell said. “She doesn’t have the evidence, but she is obviously hoping that this is what — that Robert Mueller and what the congressional committee’s going to do.” - Andrea Mitchell, MSNBC “While Clinton says she takes full responsibility for her defeat, everything else she says about the election belies that rhetoric. What taking the full blame and responsibility actually means is saying this: There were lots and lots of circumstances outside my control that hurt my chances. But at the end of the day, it was my campaign and my name on the ballot. And that means I lost and I own that. Clinton isn't saying that. Probably because she simply doesn't believe it.” - Chris Cillizza, CNN Editor-at-large “Clinton's latest comments continue a post election emergence in which the former Democratic nominee continues to point fingers for her loss, though other accounts of the Clinton campaign have put more fault in her corner.” - Jessica Taylor, NPR Political Correspondent Finally, we also have this, from Brendan Nyhan, a professor of government at Dartmouth College and New York Times contributor: “I’m seeing a disturbing trend of people taking the very serious and real questions about Russian interference and using that as a pretext for all sorts of wild and unsupported conspiracy theories. These are often coming from internet personalities and people who work on social media, but they’re infiltrating into the discourse more generally through liberal elites who are amplifying them. So we’re seeing a spread of these claims out into the mainstream in a way that I th...

  • 05.24.17. Pray for Manchester
On this edition of Middle Theory, we focus on the atrocious terror attack on a concert in Manchester, England, for which the Islamic State has claimed responsibility. As we kick things off, The Mouth and McNonymous take a strange (and humorous) trip down memory lane, before getting into the latest news, which includes a very interesting story told by Guardians of the Galaxy star Kurt Russell, as well as highlights from President Trump's visit with the Pope. We also examine recent audio from the House Intelligence Committee's hearings, during which Trey Gowdy asked some difficult questions of former CIA Chief John Brennan. What do Brennan's answers tell us about the ongoing investigation into Russian collusion and influence during the 2016 election? Then turning our attention to the horrific attacks that occurred at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, England, we examine the latest news pertaining to the attack, and ask what, if anything, can truly be done to aid in preventing further similar attacks. We ask that our listeners send thoughts and prayers out to the families of victims, in addition to support for Manchester, its people, and the communities involved. • 05.22.17. The Seth Rich Conspiracy
This week on Middle Theory, we look at the ongoing conspiracy theories associated with the tragic death of Democratic National Committee staffer Seth Rich. As we kick off this week's program, we look at Trump's encounter with glowing orb, which apparently sets alight social media. We also look at the devastating incident where several pedestrians were struck by car in Times Square, New York. In other NY news, Anthony Weiner pleads guilty in the latest in a string of "sexting" scandals he was involved with. We've also had a number of passings this week, beginning with Roger Ailes, the Fox News chief, and Soundgarden's Chris Cornell, age 52, who ended his final gig with a performance of "In My Time Of Dying," and shared dark Facebook posts just hours before he was found dead with 'band round his neck -in suspected suicide' in Detroit. In other news, Julian Assange's rape investigation has been dropped in Sweden, which leads into this week's big story, which involves the range of conspiracy theories associated with the death of Democratic National Committee staffer Seth Rich. Is there more going on here, or is there still good reason to question how the media is reporting the mysterious death of Seth Rich?
