Why does R2-D2 wake up from low power mode? Of course the real reason is simply because that’s what the story needed, and it was nice to have a character return after losing Han Solo. But JJ Abrams said his intent was to have BB-8’s little moment with Artoo earlier in the film be the catalyst for the astromech’s awakening. BB told Artoo he had a piece of the map to Luke Skywalker, and so the older droid started searching his databanks for any information that might help. He finds it in the Imperial archives he accessed on the Death Star way back in A New Hope. The same archives Kylo Ren also tells Rey the First Order would have used to determine Skywalker’s location if they either got the map from her or BB-8. R2-D2 found the relevant information, woke up, and together they pieced together the full map to Ahch-To. #starwars

The Confederacy of Independent Systems was made up of thousands of planets that seceded from the Galactic Republic. After generations of corruption seeping into Republic senators, many planets began to feel misrepresented by their governmental leadership. The Galactic Senate gave preference to rich Core Worlds over the struggling Outer Rim, who gave taxes and support to a Republic that offered little in return. A Jedi Master named Dooku was sympathetic to their plight, and felt the Jedi Order had also fallen prey to corruption and apathy. He left the Jedi and returned to his homeworld of Serenno to lead a secessionist movement. He also became the secret Sith Apprentice to Darth Sidious, and together they orchestrated a galactic conflict between the Republic, the disgruntled systems, and several megacorporations. Although many of the planetary members of the Confederacy had pure motives for seceding, their movement was overrun by the Sith, the megacorporations, and their lust for credits and power. When Separatist leadership was wiped out and the Clone Wars came to an end, the Empire reabsorbed many planets that had seceded, and reconquered any that initially refused. #starwars

Who were Rey’s parents? Their story was told in the novel Shadow of the Sith by Adam Christopher. Her father, Dathan, was created on Exegol about twelve years before the Battle of Yavin. He was a failed clone of the Emperor; a strandcast meant to contain Palpatine’s spirit in the event of his death. But Dathan had no connection to the Force and was considered to be an abomination. When he was about sixteen he escaped, or was allowed to escape Exegol, and he set off to create a life of his own. He traveled for eleven years until he met a woman named Miramir on the planet Hyperkarn. They fell in love, got married, and had a daughter they named Rey. Hoping to hide from the Sith, they moved to Jakku where they worked as junk traders for five years until Ochi of Bestoon picked up their trail. They temporarily hid Rey with Unkar Plutt, hoping to lure Ochi to another desert world, Pasaana, before returning for their daughter. But they were caught and killed and Ochi perished on Pasaana, so Rey was left on Jakku to survive on her own. #starwars

Did the Kaminoans know about Order 66? They definitely knew. In The Clone Wars season six, a clone named Tup has a malfunctioning inhibitor chip, and executes Order 66 early, killing a Jedi in the middle of a battle. A Kaminoan scientist named Nala Se informs prime minister Lama Su of a preemptive execution of clone protocol 66, prompting him to reach out to Lord Tyranus, whom he calls by name. But they seem to be under the impression Tyranus himself is a Jedi, and that Order 66 was a safeguard against rogue Jedi. So they may not have known that the clone army was intended to one day wipe out all of the Jedi, even if they knew of its existence. But I also don’t think they cared. They only seemed to care about doing their jobs well and getting paid. #starwars

Utapau was an Outer Rim world covered in flatlands that were pockmarked by massive sinkholes. At the bottom of those holes was a supposedly planet wide body of water called the world ocean. The water eroded the continents of Utapau, causing most of the planet’s surface to be highly unstable. The Utai and the Pau’ans who lived there settled on the most stable continent of their world, setting up civilizations inside the sinkholes. Utapau’s remote location made it ideal for covert operations during the Clone Wars. Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker investigated a murder there, leading to the discovery and destruction of a huge kyber crystal that Darth Sidious planned to use for the Death Star’s superlaser. Shortly after that event, General Grievous used Utapau as a base after his retreat from the Battle of Coruscant. The planet was liberated by Republic troops, and was then quickly occupied after the execution of Order 66 and the rise of the Empire.

What happened to Coruscant after the Battle of Endor? The movie shows us celebrations taking place in Monument Plaza as citizens tear down a statue of the Emperor. Stormtroopers arrived shortly after and opened fire on the crowd. Coruscant remained under Imperial control for the following year with Mas Amedda serving as a puppet leader imprisoned in the Imperial Palace. Several young rebels were able to break Amedda out of captivity, possibly with the help of an old Coruscant diner owner named Dexter Jettster. After the Imperial defeat at the Battle of Jakku, Ammeda was able to address the New Republic and offer his official surrender, bringing an end to the Galactic Civil War. #starwars

Why didn’t any Resistance allies answer the call to help at the Battle of Crait? The Rise of Skywalker novelization explains that it wasn’t simply a matter of losing hope, as Leia fears in The Last Jedi. On Kijimi Poe confides in Zorii Bliss that he’s afraid no one even heard their message. One of the First Order’s priorities after the destruction of the New Republic senate was shutting down communications, especially to planets friendly to the Resistance. Poe knows for a fact that the First Order had been jamming their transmissions, but he did also fear that the galaxy had truly given up hope. #starwars
