Tear gas, rubber bullets and flash grenades have been used by law enforcement in Los Angeles after protesters took to the streets in response to Donald Trump’s deployment of the National Guard.

The protesters blocked off a major freeway on Sunday (8 June), setting self-driving cars on fire, as federal agents tried to control the crowd.

Some threw objects at police from behind a makeshift barrier, while others hurled chunks of concrete, rocks and electric scooters and fireworks at California Highway Patrol officers.

President Donald Trump made renewed calls to “BRING IN THE TROOPS” and declared things in Los Angeles are looking “really bad” after reports of looting and dozens more arrests were made.

Protesters and the authorities were embroiled in violent clashes overnight, with hordes of demonstrators flocking to the streets against the Trump administration’s immigration raids in the city.

The first of at least 2,000 National Guard troops descended on LA on Sunday morning, less than two days after protests first erupted, leaving California Governor Gavin Newsom urging the president to withdraw his order.

A major manhunt is underway after two people were killed in a shooting near Las Vegas’ Bellagio Fountains following an “online conflict”, police said.

Officers rushed towards gunfire at around 10:40pm local time (06:40am UK time) where they found two people lying on the floor with gunshot wounds, Las Vegas undersheriff Andrew Walsh said. Both victims died from their wounds despite the efforts of first responders.

Police believe they know the identity of the suspect and that he was involved in an online conflict with one of the victims. Undersheriff Walsh said they believe “this is an isolated incident, knowing that the suspect and the victim had previously engaged in some type of conflict using a variety of social media platforms”.

Footage circulating on social media shows a gunman firing shots in front of the Bellagio Fountains in what appears to be a confrontation with someone else.

This is the moment a man is chased across the runway at Heathrow Airport, weaving in between airplanes.

The incident was captured live on the YouTube channel Big Jet TV on Sunday (8 June).

The person behind the camera can be heard saying: “What's going on here? Why would there be people running across the [tarmac]? What's this all about? That is not right.”

A Heathrow spokesperson said: “Working with partners, we quickly resolved an incident at the airport involving an individual who accessed the Airfield Taxiway. The individual has been removed from the airport. The airport continued to operate as normal and passengers travelled as planned.”

Israeli forces have stopped a Gaza-bound aid boat and detained Greta Thunberg and other activists who were on board, enforcing a longstanding blockade of the Palestinian territory that has been tightened during the war with Hamas.

The activists had set out to protest Israel's ongoing military campaign in the Gaza Strip and its restrictions on the entry of humanitarian aid, both of which have put the territory of some two million Palestinians at risk of famine.

The Freedom Flotilla Coalition, which had organised the voyage, said the activists were “kidnapped by Israeli forces” while trying to deliver desperately needed aid to the territory.
