Do good, BE great. Sounds simple. From a one-day wake-up call, Emily decided to be a runner. Along the way to becoming an eleven-time marathoner, she quickly adopted a “no failures or mistakes, only lessons” mantra. Ecstatically, Emily shares, “we can learn from everyone; we just have to be willing to listen,” - spoken like a true podcaster and listener. We love sharing our successes, inspiring the next person, and applauding everyone’s attempt. This is the story of a girl that spent her childhood through early adulthood believing what she was told, that she wasn’t a runner. Now, she’s even run the Boston Marathon.
Emily Abbate is a connector on a mission to empower women to live healthier, happier, and more motivated lives. Now an eleven-time marathoner and triathlete, the veteran wellness journalist (bylines include GQ, Well+Good, Glamour, and more) and former Fitness Editor at SELF Magazine wasn’t always kickstarting her days with runs around Central Park or leading workouts on Good Morning America. Abbate went through a dramatic transformation in college, combatting negative self talk by integrating regular movement and healthier eating practices into her regular routine — ultimately losing 70 pounds and gaining a fresh perspective that catapulted her into a career in the health and fitness space.
The wellness coach shares these experiences with her audience on Hurdle, acclaimed by The New York Times as “addictive,” with more than 7 million downloads to date. Featured in Health, Shape, and Runner’s World, Abbate aims to empower her audience to feel less alone on their own wellness journeys, and does so through important conversations with everyone from elite athletes to top CEOs and founders. At the core of her mission is authenticity, which she brings not only to the show but also to her on-air commentary and keynote speeches.

Darren Mota, no stranger to obesity had trouble breathing at work after a short climb up TWO steps. Within days, he knew something had to change and he got himself to the gym only to then discover that his continued trouble breathing was perhaps linked to a deviated septum. After getting a CT Scan at the doctor's office to check the severity of his suspicion, the doctor informed Mr. Mota that there was a bigger problem, the results uncovered a baseball-sized brain tumor.
As a child, Darren's mother died while he was in his infancy, and his father immigrated to the United States from the Dominican Republic. A few years in after the move to New York, Darren's father was murdered in an honorable attempt to protect a young lady pestered that evening inside a bar, his killer has yet to be identified. His grandparents took him in as their own and instilled the fortitude that carried him forward as life continued to throw obstacles on his path.
Mota's inspiring story perfectly depicts the one-mile-at-a-time approach that inspired The Mile 40 Podcast.
Darren Mota is a native New Yorker with a passion for people, sports, and health & wellness. He lives an active life and believes that fitness, healthy eating, and recovery is the key to living longer. You will frequently find Darren in the gym at 6am every morning, running a race on Saturdays, and playing baseball on Sundays.
Darren didn’t always have this mindset. After battling obesity and beating a brain tumor, that switch quickly flipped. He hopes through his story and journey he will inspire others to live a healthy life and believe that everything is possible if you put your mind to it. “You can either lie down and give up or get up and fight to regain control of your life.

The doctors told James' mom that he might be born with no limbs. She set the tone early, she was ready to love and raiser her son to meet his highest potential no matter what. At age one, he was diagnosed with severe asthma, and over the course of his lifetime, he has been hospitalized over twenty times and experienced being airlifted to the hospital. Growing up in a low-income, high-crime area of Mount Vernon, New York, James' potential might have been limited in some peoples' eyes. A man who built his reputation by continually showing up when the universe stacked the odds against him, he lives a line that he preaches daily, "Rest if you must, but don't you quit."
James's journey started taking off at a modeling contest and then quickly elevated to dancing with Madonna. Keeping things light, James says, "Life is like a simulation, as long as you 100% believe in what you want." Today, James is a certified coach at ToneHouse, the premiere, athletic-based, Strength & Conditioning training facility touted by many as one of the most intensive workouts in the New York City fitness scene.
James T. McMillian, a NASM certified Personal Trainer, as well as certified in Trigger Point self-myofascial release techniques, and native of Mt. Vernon, NY, obtained his B.A. in Visual and Performing Arts from Syracuse University. Since the age of five, James’ passion for fitness and excellence was evident as he thrived in football, wrestling, track and rugby, which extended through high school and college. Through athletics, he developed a deeper love for fitness, which led to his immense passion for health and aiding others in their pursuit to reach their optimal level of fitness. After being recognized for his own fitness, he was later signed to the Wilhelmina Modeling Agency in 2011 and featured regularly in the Men’s Fitness Magazine, Muscle and Fitness Magazine and Nike campaigns. Early in his childhood, James and his family received devastating news restricting him from participating in athletics due to Asthma. Being the fighter he is, he laughed at the report and committed himself to proving to the doctors and others that despite difficult obstacles, greatness can be achieved with the mental fortitude to succeed. Through his vibrant personality, he works to convey to clients his belief that training should be an experience and never a task. His mantra is "If your heart beats you are already motivated to succeed. Nothing can stop the will of heart.”

The administration shut down New York City, business owners were in a bind regardless of industry and arguably gyms were amongst the hardest hit. Unlike restaurants, there was no take-out option and no foot traffic meant no revenue. Everything changed in the blink of an eye and organizations had to think quick or face the reality of potential doom. Eric knew the desire for human interaction wasn't gone forever but his baby , the business he invested his life savings to build (SWERVE 1.0) had to grow up quick and his in-person model had to transform. Coming out of the pandemic had tremendous challenges amplified by staffing shortages, supply chain concerns and a looming recession. Posner’s SWERVE 2.0 was a brilliant fix for addressing the many changes that stemmed. SWERVE 2.0, a SaaS company was Eric and his team’s way to marry team-based workouts with tech-induced fitness. He led his team to act quick when many of his peers saw their businesses collapse; he leveraged the lessons he's learned over a lifetime as a leader and he doubled down on the white space he saw years prior.
Eric Posner (Co-Founder & CEO) is the driver of the company's vision, financials, investor relations, and marketing. Eric co-founded Swerve with his high school friend and teammate JH McNierney, who both went on to play division one Lacrosse in college. After pursuing his education at Harvard, studying Psychology and Economics, he went into investment banking, where he unlocked a new way of team building with clients and colleagues, working out together. After taking countless classes, the idea was born to bring the power of team sports to the boutique fitness space. In creating Swerve in 2013, the two embarked on a new journey together. Opening four indoor cycling studios in NYC and in the Hamptons, allowing the two friends and business partners to create an elevated fitness concept that included something they were incredibly passionate about - team sports.
The differentiation at Swerve was in the way the class was divided into teams allowing for team competition and community-building rather than leaderboards and individual winners. As the pandemic brought empty studios and saddles, it also sparked innovation and change. Eric and JH found the whitespace in the market and pivoted Swerve into a content & technology company to meet the needs of the evolved consumer and to solve problems for big box gyms. Now, Swerve’s world-class trainers are filmed at the NYC HQ and livestreamed onto large video walls inside of existing cycling studios (within big box gyms), creating an immersive, theater-like experience. Swerve's proprietary technology seamlessly connects to existing bikes at gyms, offering a turnkey operation. The newest version of Swerve launched in November 2021, and is redefining group fitness as a category by infusing livestreamed content, connected fitness technology with two-way communication, and gamifying the experience through a team-based format that appeals to a broad audience of all fitness levels. The company's plan is to have 5,000 locations in 5 years!

Diagnosed with Best Disease (vitelliform macular dystrophy) at age ten, Joe’s vision degenerated to nearly blind before entering college. But how does a kid rapidly losing their eyesight maintain a positive spin on life? Joe’s parents reminded him not to focus on the “what ifs” but to reshape his approach to the “even ifs.” Through Project Endure, Joe’s umbrella of ventures from coaching to media presence, Rinaldi pushes the mantra, “you can only find strength through struggle.” Joe talks about the "two kinds of hard" the hard that you choose and the hard that chooses you and he's made it his purpose to help his audience reconcile the purpose of both.
