  • International Sloth Day

The Metabolically Efficient Boys of Comedy™ celebrate International Sloth Day!

A couple of years ago Shane spent a couple of months in a slothfully time obsessing over sloths instead of doing actual work.  This week the boys sit around and discuss sloth mysteries to prepare you for all of your International Sloth Day (Oct 20) gatherings and festivities.

How have sloths been able to survive for millions of years in a seemingly cutthroat world?  Not only have they been able to hang in there, but they have thrived many times in Earth's history.  Sloths have even evolved multiple times independent of one another!  Sloths' unique evolutionary niches only get more weird and interesting the more we dig into them.  There is even a big sloth mystery that continues to elude scientists today.

Listen in to try to solve it yourself.  Be warned, The MEBC™ may find yourself contemplating sloths for many International Sloth Days to come.

Planfulness: Intentions and actions related to planning for personal change

Using Resources: Obtaining assistance from resources outside one’s self

Intentional Behavior: Intentional action aimed at producing personal growth

The GSBC™ also use the opportunity to talk about future goals for Mind Under Matter and what changes they are implementing to grow the show.  You can help by spreading the word about the show!

  • Wedding History

The Officiating Boys of Comedy™ marry a couple!

At the Campout Festival Shane and Ramin were asked to marry soft rockin’ Honey Bears Brittney Conklin and Andrew Havok and we wanted to share the ceremony with you.

This week we look through the history of marriage to find out how these traditions came to be.  Come to find out, marriage traditions have many horrifying origins.  How can The Church of MUM turn the dark oddities of past into fun absurdity for the future?

  • Let's Go Places
The Flying Boys of Comedy™ booked you a first-class ticket on the MUM Rocketship!

Humans have invented so many ways to explore this world that we take so many human marvels for granted.
It wasn’t that long ago that flying was something you would get dressed-up for and bring back a pathogenic bird as a souvenir to impress all your friends.  Now when you fly, you just get pathogens and friends trying to get out of giving you a ride to the airport.

This is the last episode before The Mind Under Matter Campout Festival in Raleigh Sep 9-11 so The FBC™ have travel on their minds.

  • In-Group Favoritism

This week The In Boys of Comedy™ discuss out-group bias.

Implicit association tests try to determine our gut reactions to others.  How much can they tell us about our biases?  Are we determined by our instincts to discriminate against others?  Or are they a biased way of detecting bias?

Our minds categorize and make snap judgments to navigate life, but these efficiencies in the brain are sometimes a source of human suffering.  Cooperation, forming groups, and relating with others close to us is one of the joys of life, but it can have a cost of excluding or discrimination.

How many of our biases are the product of evolution?  How much of a role does upbringing and culture influence what we think about outsiders?
