Modern neuroscience has shown that meditation is exercise for our brain. Like a muscle with exercise, we can change and optimize how our brain functions—it is called neuroplasticity. And one way to do it is with meditation. In this episode Paul talks about the science behind meditation and a simple metaphor that helped him understand how it works. Imagine a chinup as a metaphor: the repetitive movement itself is like the repetitive “movement” of meditation—as thoughts arise you return again and again to refocus on the present; the bicep/back muscle is our brain's frontal cortex; the muscle tissue is the frontal cortex gray matter; the enhanced muscle resulting is the enhanced frontal cortex aka we become more calm and clear headed. As always, the ep ends with a guided meditation at 10:50.
