Yes, Feelings are Scary...
A lot of people ask me “how do I stop being anxious?” It’s really because feelings are scary. When they get too intense we come up with all sorts of ways to avoid them.
Anxiety is a natural part of life, and some degree of anxiety is healthy and helpful. Problems arise when we start telling ourselves a story about the anxiety. Our brains love finding threats, and it can feel sometimes that the feeling of anxiety is life threatening.
Really, the question is how do I stop anxiety controlling me? There are practical steps you can do to avoid or reduce the triggers, but I want to address the feeling of it.
During your mindful minute or clarity break, spend time sitting with the feeling instead of avoiding it. Note the direct experience of your body sensations. Where to you feel the anxiety in the body?
Starting off you may only by able to do this for 2-5 seconds before it’s overwhelming and that’s okay. Over time you’ll get more comfortable with the sensations and realise that while not pleasant, you can work with it, and it’s not life threatening. Once something is workable, it’s no longer in control of you.
