In this episode replay from 2022, Imara discusses how the idea of Black civil rights has been reduced to the idea of changes in specific laws. But the civil rights movement also included the ideas of what we now call Black liberation: a specific revisioning of what our society should look like steeped in racial justice. Consequently we can see that the civil rights movement never totally succeeded and has a tremendous amount of unfinished business that we live out every single day. 
That’s why we wanted to talk with Black trans leaders about what a new agenda for Black civil rights should look like. Our first guest, Qween Jean, is the founder of Black Trans Liberation. She’s an activist and artist who’s critical work centers Black trans people in the fight for racial equity. Then Imara talks to Kayla Gore, the co-founder of My Sistah’s House, a fully fledged aid and advocate organization that started as an emergency shelter with 8 beds.

MLK Day Replay: A New Black Trans Civil Rights Agenda

"Right now, trans people face the unprecedented combination of political, social and physical violence--to the extent that when stories are told about our community, it is often through the lens of this violence,” says Imara Jones, host and creator of &lt;i&gt;TransLash Podcast&lt;/i&gt;, Apple Podcasts’ Spotlight show for August 2022. “But the truth is that our lives are defined by so much more beyond hate. In almost every area of society, trans people are innovating, creating new futures and thriving--and this is the story I want to tell.”Jones first made an impact in a 2018 online docuseries about her transition and life and four years later, the podcast is just one part of TransLash Media, a fast-growing platform and nonprofit organization telling stories and reflecting the culture through a trans perspective. With new episodes twice a month, Jones delivers illuminating discussions with guests from the trans community as well as allies to help create a fairer world for all.
Each episode also starts with a segment that highlights a moment of joy to add a bit of levity to some of the heavier topics she covers. “We showcase the fundamental hope and joy which propels our community forward,” she says. “If you care about and want to understand trans people at this moment, we have evolved into essential listening both for our community and those outside of it.”

As political attacks on trans athletes escalate, trans powerlifters are continuing to push their sport forward. In this episode, Imara talks with two competitive powerlifters who are breaking records and fighting for their right to compete. First, she’s joined by two-time national champion, JayCee Cooper, who outlines her years-long legal battle with USA Powerlifting over her experience of discrimination by the organization. Next she talks with the World’s Strongest Trans Man, Scott Percy, about what that title means to him and how he hopes to inspire other transmasculine people to compete.

What do the struggles for environmental justice and trans liberation have in common? In this Earth Day episode, Imara examines the shared goals and strategies of these two movements. Environmental Justice Through A Trans Lens

In celebration of Autism Acceptance Month, Imara learns more about the politics and lived experiences of being autistic and trans. She’s joined by influential social psychologist and author of the books “Unmasking Autism” and “Unlearning Shame,” Devon Price. During their wide-ranging conversation, the two dive into the complexity around defining what autism is, how the far right exploits stigma around autism against trans people, and the intricacies of self-diagnosis.

Being Autistic and Trans

In the wake of Nex Benedict’s tragic death, Imara examines the escalating hostility and political attacks on trans kids in Oklahoma. First, she speaks with Oklahoma State Representative Jacob Rosecrants about keeping his trans son out of the spotlight, learning from non-binary state representative Mauree Turner, and what he’s hearing from his conservative colleagues behind closed doors. Next, Imara’s joined by Oklahoma State University researcher and advocate, Amy McGehee, to discuss what families of trans youth are grappling with since Nex Benedict’s death and the importance of creating a sense of safety at home for gender nonconforming kids.

As the 2024 awards season comes to a close, Imara reflects on the groundbreaking contributions of trans filmmakers and actors to cinema.
