  • 54. From Battling a Brain Tumor to Becoming a Clean Beauty Mogul with Indie Lee

In 2008, Indie Lee was diagnosed with a life-threatening brain tumor that doctors felt could be environmentally derived and attributed to something as simple as what she was putting on her skin. This was her awakening.

After surviving a successful surgery, she embarked upon a new journey, Indie Lee skincare - a clean beauty line dedicated to educating and empowering others to live their healthiest life.

Now 12 years later, Indie, a mom of 3, former CPA and brain tumor survivor is thriving (and her company is too). Indie Lee skincare can be found in every major retailer.

In this episode Indie shares her journey, all the ups and downs - including how she sold all her jewelry, cashed out her 401k and went into debt, plus the hundreds of hours away from her children and sacrifices she made to bring the company to its success today. We also go into her spiritual practices and wellness rituals.

I love Indie's positivity, passion and grit and she is an inspiration that it's not too late to embark on a new journey because you only have the present.

  • 53. Unexplained Infertility, Surrogacy & Launching a Hormone-Safe Skin Care Brand with Sara and Ben Jensen, Founders of Hugh & Grace

Sara and Ben Jensen went through 14 years of unexplained infertility and after many trying years, they were blessed with 2 miracle babies created out of surrogacy each by one of their sisters.

Their two children became the namesake and inspiration for their new company: Hugh and Grace, which is the first skincare brand addressing hormone disruption and hormone self-care in the market.

In today's episode, Sara and Ben open up to all the raw emotions of what that infertility journey looked like from both perspectives as partners, how their relationship with each other and the mindset of being parents evolved over time, and all the lessons they learned along the way which led them to launching Hugh & Grace.

Their story is so inspirational and I thank them for opening up and sharing their unfiltered story.

  • 50. Parent & Partner to Your Skill Set & Navigate the Transition of Matrescence Using the Ultimate Life Tool with Lara Schulte

Lara Schulte is a mom, wife, podcaster, coach and believer in doing motherhood your way. As a certified human behavior specialist she works with moms to help them learn to parent and partner to their skill set, owning their motherhood, and saying goodbye to comparison & fear once and for all.

She was the co-host of the Generation.Mom podcast and a mom to 2 young boys (and pregnant with baby #3).

I wanted to interview Lara because she coaches using the Ultimate Life Tool (ULT). The ULT is an assessment test I had taken in the past and it taught me so much about how I function, what fuels me and the environment I thrive in. There are so many nuances to the assessment, but I found it to be so much more helpful than any other assessment (like the Enneagram, 16Personalities, Kolbe, etc…).

  • 49. How to Achieve Work-Life Brilliance with Cherylanne Skolnicki

Cherylanne Skolnicki is the founder and CEO of the Brilliant Balance Company, and she's on a mission to help all working moms feel like rock stars.

As an entrepreneur with a husband and three kids of her own, she knows exactly how it feels to have too much to do and not enough time to do it. It's exhausting, it's stressful, and it can be tempting to just give in to the chaos.

Like most children of the 80s and 90s, Cherylanne grew up believing she could have it all. She started her first business while still in high school, and dreamed of one day becoming a CEO. Despite her demanding work schedule, she still traveled, ran marathons, and volunteered like a boss. And then she had 3 children. All of a sudden, the unrelenting pace she was running at felt unsustainable.

That's when she knew she had to reorder her life so all the pieces would truly fit - including not just a thriving career and family life, but also a good night's sleep and some time to herself!

It wasn't easy at first, but she finally discovered a set of practices that truly worked. That prompted her to found Brilliant Balance, and her playbook has helped thousands of professional women reclaim rock star status over the last decade.

Her company, Brilliant Balance, offers work-life mentorship and coaching programs to help you have a fulfilling career, a thriving family life, and a strong sense of self.

  • 48. The Therapeutic Value of Art: A Story of Abuse, Addiction and Perfectionism with Jessica Hughes

**Please Note: This episode/interview contains portions of content that discuss traumas dealing with abuse, addiction and suicidal thoughts and could be triggering.**

Jessica Hughes is a mom of 7 and an incredibly talented artist who had a decades-long career that has taken her from textile designer, to illustrator, art educator, entrepreneur, to her existing endeavor as a professional abstract artist. But of all she is a survivor. A survivor of sexual abuse, substance abuse, multiple forms of addiction including one I just learned from her called "white collar addiction", and an eating disorder almost all while being a mom to 7 children.

From the outside, Jessica was the perfect wife, perfect mom living in an upscale suburban neighborhood with the perfect house. But internally, she was suffering so deeply in many ways. If anyone saw the Meghan Markle interview, it parallels how no matter how put together or perfect someone looks from the outside, you never know what is happening behind closed doors so have compassion and empathy for everyone. It also showcased a very important point that it is so important to not only ask for help but also get the help you need.

I am so honored to be able to share her raw and powerful story with you all and hope that her way of using art as an outlet for helping herself and others heal inspires you to look at art as a powerful medium that can bring joy, growth, and self discovery.

  • 46. Building a Multi-Million Dollar Allergy-Friendly Food Company with Denise Woodard, Founder of Partake Foods

Moms are always trying to solve problems, especially when it comes to helping your own children, so when Denise Woodard's daughter Vivienne was diagnosed with a laundry list of food allergies it inspired her to take an entrepreneurial route she never imagined!

Denise Woodard is the Founder/CEO of Partake Foods, an allergy-friendly snack company that she was inspired to start because of her daughter Vivienne's experience with food allergies.

With so little options in the market for delicious healthy allergy-friendly snacks for kids, Denise, who had a background working in emerging brands for Coca-Cola and a scrappy entrepreneurial spirit decided, why not make a product for her daughter herself.

After many cookie iterations, lots of LinkedIn stalking and a little luck, that vision has turned into a multi-million dollar allergy-friendly food company that will be in 5,500 stores by the end of 2021. On top of that success, Denise is the first woman of color to raise over $1 million for a food startup which includes a $4.8 million series A funding round in December 2020, led by investors including Rihanna and Marcy Venture Partners, Jay-Z's firm who led the initial $1MM seed round.

I love how Denise not only took a real problem in her own family but also created a company that strongly believes in a greater social mission and is giving more women and people of color the opportunity to "partake" at the table too. But besides building a company and being a role model for other women of color, Denise is an incredible mom and shares insights into how she was able to build this company, raise capital and make it happen while raising her daughter.

  • 45. Fueled by Food: Turning a Passion into a Product with Eunice Byun, Co-Founder and CEO of Material

Today's guest is Eunice Byun, the CEO and co-founder of Material, a company that celebrates home cooks and their desire for good-looking, high-performing products.

But only a few years ago Eunice was working her way up in the retail industry with a successful career at some of the top brand names in NYC. But her passion for design mixed with a love for food and inspired by her Korean-American family background in restaurants led her down a path to starting Material with her co-founder Dave… after she already had her first kid.

Eunice is now the mom to two young girls, a five year-old and a 1 year old.

I love how Eunice incorporates her eldest into the business and leads by example, showing her daughter that she doesn't have to conform to any societal norms or parental pressures and that she can pursue whatever she has the passion to do in life.

But I hope this also inspires you to also pursue that passion in your life. If you go to sleep thinking about an idea and wake up thinking about that same idea - it might be the sign of something you were destined to pursue.

About Mommy's on a Call | Wellness & Mindfulness for Modern Moms, Mindful Parenting, Entrepreneurship

From the publisher's feed

You don’t need another podcast telling you to wake up at 5am and optimize your morning routine. You need someone to tell you the truth about why you’re exhausted, why your gut keeps saying something has to change, and what it actually looks like to build a life that feels as good as it looks.
