  • Good News and Bad News on the Gun Debate
Good news on the gun debate in Connecticut; not so good in the Senate. Plus, the NRA reveals its serious plan on increasing security in our public schools. (How do we know it's serious? It's 225 pages long!) And now it's official: Mark "Appalachian Trail" Sanford will face Elizabeth Colbert Busch in South Carolina.
These are just some of the topics Cynematic, Karoli and Donna Schwartz Mills will tackle in this week's political discussion from the progressive POV, hosted by the MOMocrats. Produced by Engender Media Group.

  • MOMocrats MOMochat: Marriage Equality & the Supremes
It's Marriage Equality week in Washington: Yesterday, the US Supreme Court heard the case for and against California's Proposition 8, which made marriage illegal between same-sex couples (after couples had already been awarded the right to marry). Today, they hear arguments for and against DOMA, the Defense of Marriage Act, signed into law by President Clinton in 1996. Clinton has disavowed the law, as has Bob Barr, the Republican Congressman who authored it in the first place. And all of this occurs during a tsunami of public opinion indicating that the nation is ready for marriage equality.
MOMocrats legal expert Jessica Mason Pieklo joins Cynematic and Donna Schwartz Mills for this week's  political discussion from the progressive POV. Produced by Engender Media Group.

  • MOMocrats MOMochat: The Connecticut Effect is Over
The NRA was right: Harry Reid decided to squelch the asault weapons ban. Has the "Connecticut Effect" (after Sandy Hook) ended?
MOMocrats Karoli, Lee Reyes-Fournier, Jaelithe Judy and Donna Schwartz Mills also touch upon the Steubenville rape verdict -- and CNN's reporters' empathy for the rapists... as well as the GOP's well publicized "autopsy" of what went wrong in 2012 and how they plan to fix it.
Weekly political discussion from the progressive POV, hosted by the MOMocrats. Produced by Engender Media Group.

  • MOMocrats MOMochat: Leaning In -- Or Tuning Out?
Women's History Month started off with a bang this year, thanks to a couple of high profile female tech execs who have been featured on magazine covers and headlines for the past few weeks.
If we were truly equal, the fuss over Marissa Mayers’ no-telecommuting directive at Yahoo! would have been focused on the protests of ALL affected employees, instead of just the mothers. And Sheryl Sandberg would not have needed to advise young women to “Lean In” to get ahead in the workplace.
Nanette Fondas of MomsRising takes part in this week's  podcast. hosted by the MOMocrats. Cynematic and Donna Schwartz Mills will also steer the usual political discussion from the progressive POV.

  • MOMocrats MOMochat: A Primer in Cybersecurity
News and social media corporations were rocked last month by the discovery of intensive hacking by a unit of the Chinese Army. This week, The Nation reports that a similar hacking campaign is being employed against progressive organizations by US-based hackers.
Our guest this week is MOMocrat and cybersecurity expert Sarah Granger. She says that news like this does not surprise her.
"We've been having more and more of these notable companies being hacked in various ways over the past five years," Sarah says. "We're at a point where we really have to deal with this on a large scale." She estimates the cost to the global economy at over $300 billion annually in lost data.
The White House and Congress are responding with new bills aimed at combating the problem - but citizen advocacy groups worry that government efforts will overreach into an invasion of privacy.
And government is only one of three levels where we need to pick up our cybersecurity efforts, says Sarah, who is a fellow and co-chair of the cybersecurity group at the Truman National Security Project. Corporations and individuals are also at risk.
MOMocrats Cynthia Liu and Donna Schwartz Mills will also talk about this week's news from the progressive POV.

  • MOMocrats MOMochat: A Shot@Life
Remember how panicked everyone was a few weeks ago over the flu? That outbreak would have been worse if not for effective vaccinations. In fact, the reason we no longer live in fear of diseases like measles and whooping cough is the practice of widespread vaccination. But that is not the case everywhere. MOMocrat Lee Reyes-Fournier will be on hand to talk about her participation in Shot@Life -- and her recent visit to Capitol Hill.  Lee and MOMocrats Cynematic and Donna Schwartz Mills will also run down the week's political news from a progressive POV - including that dumb sequester. Produced by Engender Media Group.
