"And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD." Joshua 24:15

Did you ever stop to think about all the choices you make each day? What time will I get out of bed? What will I wear today? What will I choose to eat for breakfast? And the list goes on. Although these choices are important, there are choices we make that not only affect our day but also our future.

Moses had died, and Joshua was now the leader of the Israelites. They were about to enter the Promised Land and fulfill their hopes and dreams. Because of unbelief and rebellion, they had wandered in the wilderness for forty years. Now Joshua reminds them that they must settle in their minds whom they were going to serve. He could not decide for all of them. But he firmly declared that he and his household were determined to serve the Lord.

The people agreed with Joshua. Verse 24 says: "And the people said unto Joshua, The LORD our God will we serve, and his voice will we obey." They had good intentions. But promises are easily made. As we read the rest of their story, we see that they turned away from God and worshipped the gods of the nations that they conquered. So, God had to punish them as He had promised.

When the Israelites made their promise to Joshua, they were sincere and had every intention of keeping their promise. As God prospered and blessed them, they forgot the lessons they had learned in the wilderness. They began to mix with other nations and turn away from true worship of the Lord.

Our commitment to God is not just a one-time action. The most important choice we make each day is to set apart a slot and a spot where we meet with the Lord. As we read His Word and communicate with Him in prayer, we receive the strength we need for the day. Start each day with the right choice by quoting Psalm 118:24. "This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it."

Thought For Today: As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

"Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock…" Matthew 7:24:27.

If you're reading this from the United States, chances are you've been hearing about the winter storm all week. It's been impossible to miss. Winter warnings. Emergency alerts. Non-stop coverage. I have friends who even bought generators, and I considered purchasing one myself.

I made a quick trip to Costco for "just a few things," and it was busier than it was during the great COVID toilet paper crisis of 2020. People were everywhere with their carts overflowing with supplies.

I'm a little embarrassed to admit that I stood in a line of at least thirty-five people for fifteen minutes waiting for a rotisserie chicken. A chicken. Apparently, if the power goes out, we will survive on faith, bottled water, and Costco poultry.

Everyone was preparing well in advance. They were grabbing what they believed they would need to hunker down, ride out the storm, and stay comfortable until it passed.

Storm preparation looks different depending on where you live. In some regions, it's snow. In others, it is hurricanes, monsoons, or wildfires. But the principle is the same: when a storm is forecasted, people prepare.

Life, however, doesn't work that way.

Unannounced Storms

There is no spiritual weather app that sends us a push notification saying, "Brace yourself. Betrayal ahead." No alert warning us, "Sudden loss approaching," or "This conversation is about to change everything."

Most of life's storms arrive without notice. One phone call, a diagnosis, or one decision can shift everything.

All it takes is one moment and suddenly the skies darken and we're left scrambling to figure out how to stand when we didn't see it coming.

Wouldn't it be nice to have a little warning?

Yet Scripture reminds us of something far more reassuring: we may not see the storm coming, God is never caught off guard by it.

Jesus said that storms come to everyone. The difference isn't who faces them, it is what we have built our lives upon before they arrive.

You don't build a foundation in the middle of a storm. You build it long before the clouds roll in.

Faith isn't just for survival during the storm; it's the quiet, daily preparation before the storm ever forms. The prayers you pray when life is calm and the Word you store up when the skies are blue will help you steady yourself with you're knocked over with life's storms.

Storms will come, but when your life is anchored in Christ, the storm may shake you, but it won't destroy you. You may bend, but you will not break. And when the winds finally settle, you'll discover that what you built on Him still stands. Lord, prepare us today to withstand life's storms and to trust in You.

Exodus 2:6, "When she (Pharaoh's daughter) had opened it, she saw the child: and, behold, the babe wept. And she had compassion on him, and said, This is one of the Hebrews' children."

I believe that Moses' mother had great faith in God. I can only assume that she was strategic and that the decisions she made were purposeful.

The Bible isn't descriptive about this instance, but I believe that Jochebed didn't haphazardly wake up one morning and randomly make an ark of bulrushes. She was probably preparing for this day for months, to give her son the best chance of survival. I can imagine that she studied the different pathways of the river and the ones that lead to the palace of Pharaoh.

Jochebed probably knew the Egyptians believed that the Nile was a god who gave life. It's possible that when Pharaoh's daughter saw the baby boy, she thought it was a gift of life from her god.

I truly think that Jochebed was an inventive person.

Exodus 2:9, "And Pharaoh's daughter said unto her, Take this child away, and nurse it for me, and I will give thee thy wages. And the women took the child, and nursed it."

Jochebed raised Moses into his preschool years. You may look at a child under four years of age and not expect much of them, but Moses' mother impacted his life during this time.

She probably instilled the principles of God into his life every day because he grew up with a strong conviction about who he was. I'm sure she said things like, "Moses, you are set apart for greatness. You are not an Egyptian. You are not like the world. Moses, you are a Hebrew. You worship one God and His name is YAHWEH.

Jochebed's jurisdiction over her family lead her son, Moses, to have jurisdiction to lead millions of people out of Egypt and he became the great deliverer of what would become the Nation of Israel.

Moses' mother didn't only raise Moses, who would become the deliverer of Israel out of Egypt, but she raised Miriam who became the first mentioned prophetess in the Bible, and Aaron, who was the voice in Pharaoh's court and the first high priest of the tribe of Levi. Her children did mighty exploits for God.

Think about this—Pharaoh's efforts to suppress Israel were thwarted by women.

The midwives feared the Lord (Exodus 1:17).

Jochebed hid Moses for three months (Exodus 2:3-4).

Miriam, Moses' sister who was a child herself, was brave enough to speak to Pharaoh's daughter about hiring a Hebrew mother to nurse the child (Exodus 2:3:7-9).

And, Pharaoh's daughter became Moses adopted mother and protected Moses, and gave him royal opportunities (Exodus 2:10).

Today, you may ask yourself, "What can I do? I'm just one person. How can I make a difference?" When you yield yourself to the Lord, there is nothing that He can't accomplish through your life. You are a powerful woman of God. Let's take back what is rightfully ours, pray powerful prayer for our family, stand for what is right, and walk in the jurisdiction that God has given to us.

When you hear someone talk about the book of Exodus, what story do you think of immediately? Perhaps the story of the burning bush, or the deliverance out of Egypt, or the crossing over the Red Sea. Those are all wonderful accounts of God's power and authority, but I would like to focus on a person who is not always on the highlight-reel; Moses' mother, Jochebed.

When we read Exodus chapters 1 and 2, we learn that Jochebed had jurisdiction over the evil decree was given by Pharaoh.

Exodus 2:2 says, "And the woman conceived, and bare a son: and when she saw him that he was a goodly child, she hid him three months."

Giving birth during a decree to kill all baby boys was the world into which Moses was born. Jochebed made a courageous choice to not only deliver her baby during uncertain times but to hide her son for three months. How many mothers of the era did not make the same choice?

It's amazing what God can accomplish through one woman who will yield herself to the Lord.

Jochebed live during a time of many injustices and was probably filled with fear that her son would be found and killed, but she had faith.

Today, this world is out of control. You may ask yourself, why have a family? Or, what can children do in such darkness?

In Exodus, God positioned Moses to be a voice of a deliverer during an uncertain time. Today, I believe that God will raise our sons and daughters to have visions, be prophets, and be prophetesses.

Exodus 2:3, "And when she could no longer hide him, she took for him an ark of bulrushes, and daubed it with slime and with pitch, and put the child therein; and she laid it in the flags by the river's brink."

I cannot imagine the anguish Jochebed felt as she released her beloved three-month-old infant into the dangerous waters of the Nile River.

Sometimes we read over scripture without trying to put ourselves in their shoes.

When I think of nursing my daughter, Jubilee, for the last time, putting a blanket around her, placing her in an ark of bulrushes, and sending her down a river full of alligators and poisonous snakes, my heart literally feels like it's being ripped from my chest. I cannot fathom that kind of grief.

The thought of hearing her crying and not being able to soothe her, hold her, and comfort her would be literal torture.

It proves that Jochebed loved her family enough to entrust them in the hands of God, not knowing what the outcome would be.

Jochebed Took A Stand

Moses' mother, Jochebed, was an incredible, bold, tenacious woman. She operated under heavens jurisdiction, not according to Pharaoh's rule.

She was in opposition against a Nation-wide order, and her fear of God and love for her child became like gold tried in the fire—strong, chaste, and resilient.

A woman who was in the crux of uncertain circumstances decided to resist her prevailing culture by opposing a diabolical decree and chose to hide her baby.

The same river that drowned and killed the other Hebrew babies was the same river that SAVED MOSES.

Jochebed risked her own life to save someone else, and through that decision, the baby she delivered would one day deliver an entire Nation.

Jochebed's jurisdiction over her family led them to safety against all odds.

Jurisdiction is a territory or sphere of activity over which an individual or court has authority.

Every mother and father has jurisdiction over the spiritual climate of their home. Every person reading this devotion today has jurisdiction over the agenda of the enemy.

When you pray in the powerful name of Jesus, you have spiritual jurisdiction. The Bible says, "greater is He that is in me, than he who in the world." Let's stand up for our family and pray. You may not think your prayers have a lot of power, but they do. Never underestimate the power of one prayer or the power of obeying the Word of the Lord.

"I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service." Romans 12:1

The Titanic was designed by some of the most experienced engineers of its time and built with the most advanced technology available. It was considered unsinkable. So when it sank, the world was stunned.

What many don't realize is that during the design phase, engineers proposed using a newer, larger type of davit—equipment capable of lowering lifeboats over the side of the ship. With these davits, the Titanic could have carried up to 64 lifeboats… enough to save more than 4,000 people, exceeding the ship's total capacity.

The davits were approved. The lifeboats were not.

The White Star Line chose to install only 16 wooden lifeboats, which was the minimum requirement set by the Board of Trade. Though the ship could carry over 3,500 passengers and crew, there were lifeboats for only 1,178 people—just 33% of its capacity.

They broke no laws.

They violated no regulations.

They met the standard.

But the standard wasn't enough.

The decision was partly aesthetic. More lifeboats would clutter the deck and disrupt the luxury experience. The ship looked magnificent. Its gold accents, crystal chandeliers, and lavish tapestries were tragically unprepared for disaster.

They didn't understand the danger of living at the minimum.

Where's The Line?

As a new Christian I would ask, "Where's the line? What can I get away with and still make it to heaven?"

I wasn't asking how to grow closer to God,I was asking how close I could live to the edge. I was searching for minimum-requirement salvation.

The Titanic didn't sink because it lacked beauty or brilliance; it sank because it lacked lifeboats. They believed nothing could take it down. And then, suddenly, an iceberg appeared.

In our lives, we may look the part. We may say the right things. We may appear spiritually sound. But an iceberg is coming, it is only a matter of time.

The question isn't if we will face it, it is whether we are prepared when we do.

So today, let's ask God:

How can I draw closer to You?

How can I prepare myself for eternity?

How much of Jesus do I truly want?

How much of myself am I willing to give?

Today, let's go deeper and live fully surrendered lives that go far beyond the minimum.

The righteous will flourish like a palm tree, they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon; planted in the house of the Lord, they will flourish in the courts of our God. Psalm 92:12-13, NIV.

When I was a little girl growing up in Canada, I was part of an environmental club at my elementary school. For those who know me, this will come as no surprise. One year, our school launched an initiative to plant more trees. Each student was given a small evergreen and invited to replant it wherever they chose.

Excited, I brought my little tree home and carefully selected what I thought was the perfect spot in our backyard. I planted it with hope and expectation—but within a week, my perfect tree began to die.

Determined not to give up on it, my dad uprooted the evergreen, placed it in the back of our Jeep, and drove me to the forest near one of our favorite fishing spots. There, surrounded by towering trees, we dug a deep hole, replanted my sapling, watered it well, and hoped it would take root.

Every so often, my dad and I would return to that spot. We would walk through the forest searching for a small red tag tied near the top of my tree. To my amazement, it didn't just survive—it began to grow. Year after year, it stretched taller until it eventually grew higher than me.

Its roots went deep into the forest floor and began to intertwine with the roots of the other trees. Together, they withstood strong winds, heavy rainstorms, and the harsh New Brunswick winter.

And somewhere along the way, I learned a lesson I've never forgotten: Without roots, a plant cannot grow.

Deeply Rooted

In Psalm 92, the psalmist draws a similar parallel. He compares the righteous to trees that flourish because they are deeply rooted—planted in the house of the Lord. Growth, strength, and endurance are all connected to where and how we are planted.

There are seasons when God lovingly uproots us because the place we are planted is no longer conducive to growth. Uprooting is uncomfortable, and at times it can feel traumatic, yet it is often an act of grace. Temporary discomfort makes room for long-term flourishing. God allows one difficult season so we can withstand many future storms.

The condition of our spiritual roots will determine whether our relationship with God is healthy or dysfunctional.

If your soul feels weary or stagnant, it may be time to replant your roots in the Lord. Root yourself daily in the Word of God and in prayer. Connect your life to the people of God, just as trees in a forest are strengthened by one another.

When your roots go deep in Him, you can flourish, even in unfavorable circumstances, and stand firm through every season of life.

"One generation shall praise Your works to another, and shall declare Your mighty acts." (Psalm 145:4, NKJV).

Every generation has the potential to be the last generation of truth if we do not intentionally pass on our knowledge of God. If we truly believe this, then we will do everything within our power to impart biblical truth to those who follow.

One of the saddest commentaries of one generation failing another is found in Judges 2:10.

"When all that generation had been gathered to their fathers, another generation arose after them who did not know the LORD nor the work which He had done for Israel" (NKJV)

Those who came out of the wilderness into the Promised Land somehow lacked the vision or the passion to pass on their knowledge of God. Verse 12 states that their children forsook the Lord and followed after the false gods of the surrounding people.

Why did they allow this to happen. What could be more valuable than for their children to serve the One True God? Did they just assume that the younger generation would absorb truth by observation alone? Were they too caught up in work and day-to-day activities to provide consistent religious instruction? Or had they grown negligent in their own walk with God and just did not care?

don't forget

Deuteronomy 4:9 warned:

"Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things which thine eyes have seen, and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life: but teach them thy sons, and thy sons' sons."

Israel forgot to take heed; we must not allow this to happen today.

Before we can influence someone for God, "our talk must match our walk." We may never know who is watching us from afar. Young people can easily spot hypocrisy, but if we display integrity, we can make an impact. Young people respond to those who are real.

God will provide opportunities to become a godly influence in the life of another. Discover that person's interests. Notice any special abilities and encourage them to put these God-given talents to use. Applaud their successes and be there to support them when they makes mistakes. The interest of a caring adult will communicate love and acceptance.

our challenge

When the Spirit led Philip to the Ethiopian eunuch, he found the man reading from the prophet Isaiah. Asked if he understood what he was reading, the Ethiopian replied, "How can I, except some man should guide me?" (Acts 8:31).

The important question for us is how can we guide this present generation into an understanding of biblical truth? This is the challenge we face. We must not allow our generation to become the last generation of truth.

The responsibility is ours. We must pass it on.

A Final Question:

Generation Alpha (those born between 2010 and 2024) has grown up in an era with screens and devices. Technology is just a normal part of their daily life. Social media influences how they communicate, learn, and build relationships. How will this affect the way we convey biblical truth to this generation?

"Give us day by day our daily bread." (Luke 11:3)

A little water and a morsel of bread. That is all the prophet Elijah asked from the widow woman. A simple request, but it was not an easy one to fulfill. Times were worse than difficult; they were desperate.

Because of drought and famine, food was scarce. All the widow had left was a scant handful of flour and a little oil. It was only enough to bake a small cake for her son and herself. Their resources were gone, and soon they would die from starvation.

Elijah did not stop at this home by accident. God had provided very specific instructions on where to go and what to say. Although the circumstances looked bleak, God was up to something good.

Elijah reassured the woman.

"Do not fear; go and do as you have said, but make me a small cake from it first, and bring it to me; and afterward make some for yourself and your son." (I Kings 17:13, NKJV)

FAITH FOR EACH DAY

Elijah's request required faith from the widow. If she fed the man of God first, would there be anything for her and her son to eat? Could she trust his words? Could she trust God to provide food? She did as the prophet instructed and, yes, there was enough for all three to eat. Not just that day but every day until the Lord again send rain upon the land

Every day when the woman reached for the flour and the oil, there was still enough for that day. Scripture does not tell us that God sent barrels of flour and bottles of oil. Her kitchen probably looked just as empty as the day Elijah first arrived, but there was always "just enough."

"The bin of flour was not used up, nor did the jar of oil run dry, according to the word of the LORD which He spoke by Elijah." (I Kings 17:16, NKJV)

DON'T WORRY

It's easy to worry, especially when times are difficult. The bank balance may be sliding toward zero, the gas indicator in the car is hovering just above empty, and the pantry shelves are looking bare. Somehow the money stretches. Philippians 4:19 promises us that, "God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus." Many times His provision comes in unexpected ways. It is during these difficult times that our trust in God grows.

God provides for us in so many ways beyond just food and shelter.

We receive fresh mercy each morning. (Lamentations 3:22-23)

His grace abounds toward us. (II Corinthians 9:8)

His love never fails. (I Corinthians 13:8)

He forgives our iniquities and heals our diseases (Psalm 103:3)

This list is far from complete. Each day we live, God offers us so many blessings. Do we acknowledge His goodness? Do we thank Him for His faithfulness? Or do we spend our time fretting and worrying over every problem and inconvenience?

Right now, instead of worrying, let us focus on how God promised to supply our needs for this day. The flour bin is not empty and there's still some oil in the bottle. There's no need to worry about tomorrow because God is faithful every day.

"Therefore do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' . . . For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you." (Matthew 6:31-33, NKJV)

Whatever your situation, clear your mind of worry and trust God to meet your needs today. He knows what you need, and He promises to always be faithful.

PRAYER: Thank You, Lord for providing for me again today. Even when I am surrounded by trouble and cannot see my way through, I know I can rely on Your promises. You are with me and will supply my needs each day. You have never broken a promise, and You never will.

"He who covers his sins will not prosper, but whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy." (Proverbs 28:13, NKJV)

ACHAN'S STORY

Joshua 7 tells us the story of Achan, a man who thought his secret sin would stay a secret.

When the children of Israel went up against the city of Jericho, they were instructed to take none of the spoils from the city. Only the silver, gold, brass, and iron could be kept, and that was to be consecrated to the Lord. Keeping anything else was forbidden. But Achan took a garment, 200 shekels silver, and a wedge of gold. (Remember, the silver and gold were God's.) Achan then dug a hole inside his tent and hid the stolen goods. After all, who would know?

But secrets do not stay buried, and sin has consequences. Unfortunately, those consequences often affect not only the wrongdoer but also those around him. When the men of Israel went up to take the city of Ai, thirty-six of them died in battle. It should never have happened, but God revealed there was sin in the camp. One man's greed affected everyone and innocent men died. Also, Achan and his entire household were destroyed because of his sin.

DAVID'S STORY

Achan wasn't the only person in the Bible who attempted to hide his sin. King David, the man anointed by God to follow Saul as king, allowed lust to enter his heart and committed adultery with Bathsheba (II Samuel 11 and 12)). To hide his sin, David had Uriah, her husband and one of his friends, killed in battle. But God sees everything, and David's sin was revealed. Although he repented, his actions had lasting consequences.

Luke 12:2-3 warns us, "Nothing is covered up that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. Therefore whatever you have said in the dark shall be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in private rooms shall be proclaimed on the housetops" (ESV).

Both Achan and David sinned and attempted to hide their sins. One man lived, and one died. What was the difference?

When we read Achan's story, we find he confessed his sin when it was revealed. However, nothing indicates any remorse or repentance. When Nathan the prophet confronted David about his sin, David confessed his guilt. But with profound sorrow, David also repented for his actions. Although his sins were grievous, he found forgiveness.

David's prayer in Psalm 51 reveals his deep sorrow as he acknowledged he had sinned against God.

"Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions, and my sin is always before me." ( verse 3 NKJV)

SIN'S CONSEQUENCES

We fool ourselves if we think we can hide our rebellious actions from the Lord. We cannot dig a hole and bury our sins like Achan attempted. Nor can we escape the consequences of those sins. Ecclesiastes 12:14 tells us, "For God will bring every work into judgment, including every secret thing, whether good or evil."

The problem with sin is that it separates us from God. Our holy God cannot condone our unholy actions.

"But your iniquities have separated you from your God; and your sins have hidden His face from you, so that He will not hear." (Isaiah 59:2, NKJV)

Our story does not need to end like Achan's. God offers mercy and forgiveness to the repentant heart. Although David committed adultery and had one of his best friends killed, he found a path back to God when he repented. God offers the same mercy to us if we humble ourselves before Him in repentance.

"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." (I John 1:9, ESV)

If you feel weighted down with guilt and shame because of hidden sins in your life, there is hope and forgiveness. Make David's prayer in Psalm 51 your prayer also. God loves you and desires to restore you.

"Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it . . . So I do not run aimlessly." (I Corinthians 9:24 and 26, ESV)

I am not a morning person, but occasionally I find myself out in the pre-dawn hours as I drive a friend to the airport for an early flight. It amazes me when I see a lone figure up ahead determinedly jogging. I wonder at the passion that compels someone to be out at such an early hour just to run.

Running is more than just putting one foot in front of the other and starting out. As one runner's blog stated, "My friend implicitly understood that there was a difference between wanting to start running and wanting to become a runner."

PREPARATION COMES FIRST

Running requires preparation. It is not a spur-of-the-moment, haphazard type thing. It requires the right shoes for support and dressing appropriately for conditions. The runner also needs a good diet and good hydration. But none of this is sufficient without dedication and determination.

Many runners set a goal of completing a marathon. This 26.2 mile (42.195 kilometer) race requires dedication and months of training. It is not for the faint-hearted but it brings great satisfaction to the one who persevered.

STEPS TO RUNNING

The apostle Paul makes numerous references to running in his letters to the New Testament churches. Through the epistles we learn not how to run a marathon but how to run the most important race of all — a race with eternal rewards.

To become a runner, we take these steps:

We make running a priority. We cannot wait until we "find time" for the things of God. Our lives will always be too busy unless we build this into our daily schedule. (Read Matthew 6:33; Deuteronomy 4:29; Psalm 105:4.)

We practice self-discipline. "But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified" (I Corinthians 9:27, NKJV)

We equip ourselves. We must wear the right footwear and correct clothing. Instructions are found in Ephesians 6:13-17.

We increase our endurance, To do this, we must feed on God's Word and drink deeply in the Spirit through prayer. (Read II Timothy 2:15 and 3:16 and Ephesians 6:18.)

We run with excellence. Someone once explained that "Running is about consistency more than intensity."

WINNING THE PRIZE

Wilma Rudolph (1940-1994) overcame childhood polio to win three Olympic gold medals for track and field, How did Wilma accomplish this? Through determination and refusing to give up. "I ran and ran every day, and I acquired a sense of determination, this sense of spirit that I would never, never give up, no matter what else happened."

We run in this Christian life not for gold medals but for eternal rewards. But we can never win the race unless we start the race. We may face obstacles along the way — rough terrain, steep hills, stormy weather, or blistering heat. But if we keep running, we will receive the prize.
