Vancouver is going foam free following Council’s approval of the foam ban by-law earlier this year. Starting January 1, 2020, the city-wide ban will mean businesses can no longer serve prepared food or drinks in polystyrene foam cups and foam take-out containers.

Labour trouble could be brewing along the SkyTrain line. CUPE local 7000 says after more than forty sessions at the bargaining table, talks have reached a stand-still.

The union says talks broke down Tuesday when the two sides were unable to agree on several key issues. The union accuses the company of failing to offer fair wages of address the sick plan, among other things. The union says it will now approach its members and "seek direction on next steps."

That’s Maple Ridge Mayor, Mike Morden. His City Council voted 6-1 last night in favour of a controversial motion to ban what the city refers to as aggressive panhandling.

The “safer streets” bylaw would make it an offence for people to sit or lie on a street in a manner which obstructs convenient pedestrian walkways, or to ask for money after someone has said no.

Our Niki Reitmayer spoke to Kiersten Duncan. She is a Maple Ridge Councillor, who is the only one who voted against this motion.

Simi, before I worked here at CKNW, I was a university student who loved dogs, and I volunteered to be a foster home for rescue dogs. While I was volunteering, I was told that dogs who were vulnerable - such as pregnant dogs or puppies - were more likely to get sick while in the shelter. So those were the sort of dogs that were prioritized to find a foster home.

However, new research from the University of British Columbia has found that there may be another factor that plays into whether a dog will become sick after entering a shelter… and that factor is: sociability. 

I spoke with Dr. Alexandra Protopopova, an assistant professor at UBC’s Faculty of Land and Food Systems, about her study and what it revealed about dogs.

The world is watching the first televised public hearing into U-S President Donald Trump's pressure on Ukraine to investigate Democratic rival Joe Biden's family.

William Taylor, the top American diplomat in Ukraine, and George Kent, a senior State Department official in charge of Ukraine policy, appeared for joint testimony this morning. 

Taylor revealed a member of his staff overheard President Trump asking European Union ambassador Gordon Sondland whether Ukraine would move forward with an investigation into Joe and Hunter Biden… 

Taylor said he thought it was -- quote -- "crazy'' and "illogical'' for the Trump administration to make military aid contingent on Ukraine announcing investigations into political rival Joe Biden. William Taylor made the statements in response to questioning from Daniel Goldman, the investigations chief for Representative Adam Schiff, the Democratic chairman of the House Intelligence Committee. Taylor says while there was no quid pro quo, there was an explicit understanding.

Two more witnesses are expected to be questioned this week. David Holmes a State Department official, was invited to appear Friday. And Mark Sandy, the associate director for national security programs at the White House Office of Management and Budget, was invited for Saturday.
